Martha C. Stewart Obituary
GREENSBORO, NC-- Mrs. Martha Crowell Stewart passed away peacefully Friday, May 27th, 2016.
A service of remembrance will be at 11 am on Friday, June 3rd at First Presbyterian Church and her ashes will be inurned at the Church columbarium. The family will receive friends in the Virginia Gilmer Room following the service.
Martha was born in Hendersonville, NC on April 12th, 1933 and was the daughter of the late Oscar Bernard Crowell and Louise Thompson Crowell. She was married to William Harrison Stewart, now deceased, and is survived by her children: William Harrison Stewart, Jr. and his wife, Sherrie Grainger Stewart, of Greensboro; Elizabeth Stewart Long and her husband, Nicholas Thompson Long, of Atlanta; and Matthew Palmer Stewart and his wife, Carolyn Baker Stewart, of Decatur, AL. In addition to her husband and parents, she joined her late brother, Oscar Bernard Crowell, Jr., in heaven on Friday.
Martha attended Agnes Scott College and the University of North Carolina. She was the very definition of a lady in every way – unshakably strong, poised, and warm. Martha was a loyal friend, an exemplar of service, a quick mind and giving heart, and a joy to speak with on almost any topic. She traveled the world with friends and family and was interested in nearly every subject.
As for hobbies, she was a skilled and much sought after flower arranger and also an extraordinary seamstress. She loved her community and particularly enjoyed volunteering with Friends with Flowers.
In addition to her children, she is survived by her grandchildren: William Harrison Stewart III and his wife, Carrie Hagan Stewart; Matthew Grainger Stewart; Elizabeth Grainger Stewart; Allison Stewart Hearon and her husband, Scott Robinson Hearon; Mary Charles Stewart; Stewart Louise Long; Martha Rawlings Long; and Nicholas Thompson Long, Jr. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, William Harrison Stewart IV and James Blair Stewart.
In lieu of Flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church or the charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank the staff at Abbottswood and Beacon Place for their compassionate care during Martha's illness.
Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel is assisting the family. Online condolences may be made at www.haneslineberryfuneralhomes.com.
