FLAT ROCK-Mary S. McDuffie, 93, of Flat Rock, died on December 11, 2014, at Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation Center in Flat Rock after a brief illness. A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Dr. John Stouffer and Jennie Osborne Stouffer, and the wife of the late James H. McDuffie, and had resided in Hendersonville and Flat Rock since 1955.
She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania in 1943, with a degree in psychology, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In the 1960's she played an important role in the opening of the first Henderson County Mental Health Clinic, which later became Trend Mental Health Services. She was a therapist on the staff of both facilities, and after her retirement she served at several community organizations, including Mainstay as a group counselor, Hospice, and the Council on Aging. At St. James' Episcopal Church she volunteered as a bereavement counselor.
She is survived by her three sons, James and Michael McDuffie of Flat Rock, and John McDuffie of Bethesda, MD; three grandchildren, Malcolm, of Decatur GA, Elizabeth of Holly Springs, NC, and Isaac, of Baton Rouge, LA; and four great-granddaughters, Maya, of Holly Springs, NC, and Grier, Corinne, and Mira, of Decatur, GA.
In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to St. James' Church, 766 North Main Street, Hendersonville, NC 28792.
A celebration of her life will take at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at St. James Episcopal Church. Family will receive friends at the conclusion of service.
