Muriel Ione Phipps-King Obituary
Mrs. Muriel Ione Phipps-King of Hendersonville North Carolina, daughter of the late George Bowen (St. Lucia) and Louise Bowen (Barbados) was born on August 12th, 1931 in Bridgetown, Barbados, West Indies.
She was first married to Richard Ebenezer Phipps, with whom she had six children, Richard C. Phipps (USAF), (Boston, MA), Janice N. Payne (Hendersonville, North Carolina), Peter Phipps (Barbados), Azariah Phipps (Barbados), Esther Lewis (Florence, South Carolina) and David Phipps (Barbados). She was most recently married to Leo L. King by whom she is survived, however there were no children from the union.
She spent her life making others beautiful as a hairstylist and a seamstress in her early years and later worked at helping others to improve their health as a nursing assistant at Boston Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts before retiring to North Carolina.
As a result of her generous spirit and feisty personality, she was well loved. Her cooking and baking made many happy and kept them returning for more. Her advice was great when necessary, generally hilarious but on point, her point and her friends took the advice often with a smile of appreciation. She was mom to the neighborhood children and kept us all straight with a wooden ruler.
Her Christian life was as beautiful as the flowers she loved, and her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her especially cherished in the lives of her children: Richard C. Phipps husband of Cheryl Overton, (Boston, MA), Janice N. Payne wife of James Payne (Hendersonville, North Carolina), Peter Phipps (Barbados), Azariah Phipps (Barbados), Esther Lewis wife of Alvin Lewis Jr., (Florence, South Carolina) and David Phipps (Barbados).
She quietly fell asleep in death with her daughter Janice at her bedside on Wednesday, August 3rd, 2016, 9:23 a.m. at the Brian Health and Rehab Center, Hendersonville, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her first husband Richard E. Phipps and all six of her siblings.
Her grandchildren, Alvin Lewis III, Richard, Janine and Leianna Lewis, children of Esther Lewis and Alvin Lewis Jr., Michelle Phipps-Allen, Shavon, Candice, Richard and Sade Phipps, Erika Overton Quashie, Kimberly and Shavonne Overton and Helena Best, children of Richard Phipps and Cheryl Overton-Phipps. Azariah 'Eze' and Germaine Phipps, children of Azariah Phipps and Jayon Payne, son of Janice and James Payne.
Her great grand-children, Cameron, Paradise and Diamond Lewis, her nieces Margaurita Bowen (Canada), Etwyn Roberts, (UK), Esther Bowen (UK) who visited occasionally, and of other great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends all too numerous to mention.
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 PM on Friday, August 12, 2016, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 2184 Jeffress Road, Mill River, NC.
