Obituary Condolences

Norma Jean Young, 77, of Hendersonville, died Friday, April 5, 2013, at the Elizabeth House.

Mrs. Young was born October 2, 1935, in Meade County, Ky., to the late Sidney Lucas and Mary Louise Still. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, James Lucas Still.

On January 18, 1958, in Kentucky, Norma married her husband Hugh. Together, they became missionaries with the Southern Baptist Convention, which carried them to Japan on January 11, 1969. In Japan, they both were teachers. Fluent in German, French and Japanese, Norma taught the history of Japanese Art and later on taught the history of Christian Art. Norma enjoyed drawing cartoons which were published in "The Commission" and were titled "From the Field." Over the years, her cartoons were published in Baptist papers. Norma admired the quiet and peaceful culture of Japan and their respect for elders. Norma was also involved with the Baptist Peace Fellowship.

Mrs. Young retired to Hendersonville in 1998. She enjoyed painting icons using the traditional Egg Tempera Finish. She and Hugh enjoyed attending classes at Blue Ridge Community College until 2010. Norma always enjoyed her dog Balsak.

Norma is survived by her husband of 55 years, Hugh.

A Memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at St. James Episcopal Church, with the Reverend Eunice Dunlap officiating.
