Phyllis (Schmidt) Blatecky Obituary
SALUDA-Phyllis Blatecky (nee Schmidt), 90, was born in Antigo, WI to Mary and Rudolph Schmidt. She grew up on a dairy farm but left when she was 18 to work as a certified welder, building navy ships in Portland OR. Returning to Wisconsin after the war, she married Rudy Blatecky and settled in Polar.
Phyllis moved to Appleton, WI in the 1960s and worked as office manager at Riverside Cemetery. She left Appleton in 1992 to move to North Carolina where two of her children had settled. She had always dreamed of living in the mountains, and was thrilled to live in Saluda, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Phyllis enjoyed several hobbies over the years, developing proficiency in playing the organ for her church, becoming skilled in her work with stained glass, and creating beautiful items with her knitting and quilting. She shared her handmade gifts with family and friends and donated many beautiful pieces to church groups and organizations that help the less fortunate. She also did volunteer work.
Phyllis will long be remembered for her keen sense of humor. She never knew a stranger and would chat and share a laugh with everyone. She told great stories and took delight in sharing them. She opened her heart and her home to three playful furry companions (cats) over the years, Klutz, Pixie and Muffin. Always willing to try new things, Phyllis adopted new and changing technologies and had a Nook e-reader, laptop and desktop computers, and an iPad.
Phyllis passed away suddenly at her home in Saluda, NC Wednesday, March 5, 2014. She was predeceased by three brothers, Ralph, Horace and Rudolph Jr. ("Bud"), three sisters, Nina, Ranata and Violet, and her beloved husband Rudy. She is survived by three children, Alan, Peggy, and David; three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many friends.
Phyllis will be missed ... she will be remembered.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2014 at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors.
Her three children all live in North Carolina. The family welcomes notes and cards of remembrance, which may be addressed to the family at 136 Camp Creek Road, Saluda NC 28773. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer that donations in her name be sent to Saluda Senior Center, 64 Greenville Street, Saluda, NC 28773.
An online register book is available for family and friends by visiting www.thosshepherd.com. Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors and Cremation Memorial Center is in charge of arrangements.
