Rena Lowery Manning Obituary
GREENVILLE, NC-- Mrs. Rena Lowery Manning, 88, died Friday June 10, 2016. She was the 15th child of John Raymond and Sarah Catherine Lowery.
The funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday at 11 am in Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park.
A native of Trenton, NC, Rena graduated from Trenton High School and received her Bachelor's Degree in Business Education and Mathematics from East Carolina Teachers College (now East Carolina University). While there she served as the president of the Mathematics Club and organized the Mariah D. Graham Mathematics Award. Rena briefly taught business subjects at Goldsboro High School. After marriage in 1949 to J.T. Manning, Jr., she served as assistant to the Registrar at East Carolina Teachers College and later taught nursery school at Mimi's Kindergarten for a few years.
A member of Red Oak Christian Church, Rena was active in all aspects of the Church including Sunday School teacher for more than 50 years and Youth Leader. She served on the North Carolina State Board of Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ) for a term. Rena was a member and past president of the Shrinettes of Pitt County, past president of the Red Oak Extension Homemakers Club and the Pitt County Council of Extension Homemakers Clubs. After organizing the Red Oak 4-H Club, Rena served as its leader for 14 years. Her volunteer service also included two terms on Governor Bob Scott's Beautification Committee for the State of North Carolina.
She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, J.T. Manning, Jr. in 2008.
She is survived by her:
daughters, Susan Manning McNeal of Hendersonville, Faye Manning Armstrong and husband, Stan, of Greenville and Dianne Manning Roper and husband, Tom, of Wake Forest; son, Lt Col (Ret) James Thomas "Tommy" Manning, III and wife, Anne, of Wilmington; seven grandchildren, Rachel Corbeil of Hendersonville, Daniel McNeal of Chapel Hill; Stephen McNeal of Gardiner, MT, Thomas Manning of San Antonio, TX, Greta Traxler of Sophia, Crystal Josleyn of Wilmington, and Shelley Roper of Wake Forest, four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 6 – 8 pm at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
