Robert Earl Apple, 94, passed away on Monday, August 3, 2015 at Carolina Village Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Betsy Apple, his wife of 66 years, Jeannette W. Apple and a brother Richard who lost his life during WWII.
Robert was born in East Liverpool, Ohio on June 12, 1921 and was the oldest of three children. He received a Bachelor's of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Ohio University prior to entering the Army in March 1943. He was part of an engineering-aviation battalion that constructed air bases in the Pacific Theater. Following his service, he was an Assistant Professor of Engineering at the University of Texas in Austin, where he obtained a Master's in Civil Engineering.
He worked for Amoco Oil for 30 years and retired as a supervisor of engineering in Chicago, Il, in 1982 at which time he and Jeannette retired to Laurel Park, NC. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville, a volunteer for the Laurel Park Zoning Board of Adjustment for 17 years, a former member of the Civitan Club and the Hendersonville Country Club.
Robert is survived by a sister, Helen Kastrenakis of Florida, three sons: Robert E. Apple, Jr. and his wife Dorothy of Danville, Kentucky, Paul E. Apple of Horse Shoe, and David A. Apple and his wife Robin of Hendersonville, NC, four grandchildren: Lisa Smiley, Nathan Apple, Quincey Apple and Lorraine Apple, and three great grandchildren: Olivia Smiley, Taylor Apple, and Kennedy Apple.
A Memorial service will be held at a future date at the First Presbyterian Church Chapel in Hendersonville. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church at 699 N. Grove Street, Hendersonville, NC 28792.
