Obituary Condolences

HENDERSONVILLE-Robert H. Poland, 91, died peacefully on Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2015, at the Carolina Village Medical Center in Hendersonville, NC. He was born in Lakewood, Ohio, on March 10, 1923, the son of Gertrude Hicks and Ivan Poland.
Bob was the Master Counselor of the Lakewood DeMolay chapter and active in the Episcopal Church of the Ascension. After joining the U.S. Army, he was selected to attend Cleveland College and Princeton University in an education program which led to passage of the G.I. Bill. During World War II he served as a sergeant with the 69th Infantry Division, 271st Regiment in France, Belgium, and Germany. Returning to Lakewood after the war, Bob enjoyed recreational work as an umpire for AAA and minor league baseball.
Bob was employed by the Union Carbide Corporation for 44 years in production and planning in Cleveland and Fostoria, Ohio, then in production control at Union Carbide headquarters in New York City and Danbury, CT.
After moving to Hendersonville in 1986, Bob was active in Welcome Wagon, the Crooked Creek Sandtrappers golf league, Civitan, and St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church. He served on the scholarship committee of the Civitan Club, awarding college scholarships to high school students in Henderson County. At St. John's he served as an usher and Vestryman, and a member of the Men's Club.
Mr. Poland was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Alys, and his youngest son Kim. He is survived by son Jeffrey and his wife Alison in Martinsburg, WV; son David and his wife Debra in Sun City Center, FL; granddaughter Sara Lewis, her husband David, and great-granddaughter Paige in Round Hill, VA; grandsons Matthew and Jonathan in Clarksburg, WV, and grandson Jason and his wife Sara in St. Alban's, VT.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church. Rev. John Morton will officiate. Interment will follow the service in the churchyard. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM on Friday, February 27, 2015 at Shuler Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Hendersonville Civitan Club or St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church.
