HENDERSONVILLE - Rose Edna Mace Hammond, of Hendersonville, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2013.
Rose Edna, known by many as "Bunch," was the daughter of Henry H. and Nancy Caroline King Mace, of Hendersonville. Both parents were descendents of the early settlers of Henderson County. Her father pastored many of the local Baptist churches and was a founding member of the West Hendersonville Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Blue Ridge Community College, a retired real estate broker, and worked in the medical field for many years. Born in Greenville, S.C. in 1915, she spent most of her life in Henderson County. In 1932, she married Dedrick Beamon Hammond who preceded her in death in 1989 from wounds he received in France in World War II. They were parents of one son, Lt. Col. Jack L. Hammond, who preceded her in death in 1976.
She is survived by one grandson, Jack L. Hammond, II (Donna E. Taylor), of Atlanta, Ga.; three great-grandsons, Ike, Noah and Quinn Hammond, and a daughter-in-law, Della Hammond Reinert, of Peachtree City, Ga. She was also preceded in death by 11 brothers; one sister, and is survived by many nieces and nephews.
She loved her cherished mountain hometown, her vegetable garden and was never one to turn away any stray animal that wandered into her life. She will be greatly missed.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at Shepherd Memorial Park, 5045 Asheville Highway. The family will receive friends from 4-5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors, 125 S. Church St., Hendersonville.
