Thelma F. Hawkins Obituary

HENDERSONVILLE - Thelma Freeman Hawkins passed away peacefully in her sleep Monday, March 4, 2013. She was a life-long resident of Henderson County, born in 1919 to Judd and Mia Freeman of Edneyville. She grew up in a large loving family of six brothers and six sisters of whom she is survived by one sister, Delane Lyda, of Edneyville. She held all of them close to her heart along with many nieces and nephews. She loved recounting the days of her childhood and the many antics that she and her brothers and sisters enjoyed together.
Thelma was founder and owner of The North Carolina Academy of Cosmetic Art along with her sister Francis Honeycutt, now deceased. She was very artistic and enjoyed painting. She was very intelligent and business savvy lady, who taught her children and grandchildren to be independent and strong as she lived her life. Thelma's joy in life as her family. She instilled in them the importance of standing up for her family as she always did. She was loved and respected by all who knew her and will be greatly missed.
Thelma was a devoted lifelong member of Anderson Chapel Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith in Hendersonville. She found peace and hope in the bible which she read daily. Despite all hardships she suffered in life, her outlook as always positive. She loved life and trusted in God's promise. She is now asleep in Christ, waiting for his coming.
She proceeded in death by five children, Gary Summer, Whitson Sumner, Jonathan David Sumner, Patricia Irene Sumner, and Robert Douglas Sumner and two grandchildren, Gary Philip Sumner and Myra Mize Slawek.
She is survived by her youngest daughter, Mary Ann Maitland and her husband Larry R. Maitland; grandchildren, Will Mize and his wife Vivian, of Decatur, Ga., and Robert Sumner Jr. and Patty Sumner, of Hendersonville; great-grandchildren, Brad Elkins, William Sumner, Marshall Sumner, Jake Slawek, Julia Slawek, Whitson Mize, Josie Mize and Harley Mize, and two great-great-grandchildren, Ethan Hyde and Grayson Sumner.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 8, at Shepherd's Funeral Home on Church Street. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at Shepherd's Funeral Home by Pastor Dan Fyfe. Burial will follow at St. Paul's Cemetery in Edneyville.
