HENDERSONVILLE-William Allen Pace, Sr., 91 of Hendersonville died Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Carolina Village Medical Center. He was a native of Saluda and a resident of Henderson County. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack, Paul, Fred, Walter, and James Pace; and sister, Kate. After attending Saluda School grades 1-12, he graduated in 1941 as Valedictorian of his class with Perfect Attendance. He attended Mars Hill College in 1942 and received an AA Degree and graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a BS in business in 1947. He was a veteran of WWII and served in the US Navy in 1942-1945 on an LST landing craft supporting allied troops in the Pacific Theatre and as an electrician.
Mr. Pace opened the A/G Grocery Store in Saluda with his brother, Fred, who took over in the early 50's. In the late 50's he started Pace Brothers Grading and Hardware on Main Street in Saluda with his brothers, Paul and Walter, He owned the first front hydraulically powered frontend loader in Henderson County. In 1956 he moved the grading business to Hendersonville and started specializing in asphalt paving with his good friend, Lloyd Thompson. He developed many business endeavors; he was the founder of Henderson Counties first independent savings and loan, offering mortgages to local residents. He was instrumental in the development of South Hendersonville as it is today. True to his philosophy in life and business, Bill never missed a day of work, until the week before his passing. He always taught his family to work hard.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Moxley Pace; five children and their spouses, sons, Billy and Tracy Pace, John and Melanie Pace, Mark and Ginny Pace all of Hendersonville; daughters, Anne and Bob Washburn of Lake Lure, Mary Ellen and Roger Harrison of Jacksonville, FL; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He loved his ties to Old Saluda, and the many family and friends he had there, family dinners, the stock market, and tomatoes. He was the consummate entrepreneur, and cherished every aspect of life.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Hope United Methodist Church in Flat Rock with Reverend Todd McCullough officiating. Burial will follow in Saluda City Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning one hour prior to the service.
