William S. Parks

William S. "Bill" Parks, 95 of Hendersonville, NC passed away Thursday August 2nd, 2018 at Life Care Four Seasons.
Bill was born in Little Rock, AR on July 23, 1923. He enlisted in the Marine Corp in 1940 and served in WWII and Korea. He was commended for his cour-age and coolness under fire by both his command-ing officers and the men that served with him, who dubbed him "The Real John Wayne". He was awarded the Silver Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Commen-dation Medal with "V", Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, American De-fense Service Medal with Fleet clasp, America Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 bronze stars, World War II Victory Medal, Na-tional Defense Service Medal with 1 bronze star, Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze stars, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Presiden-tial Unit Citation, and 2 Good Conduct Medals. William was mustered out of the Marine Corps in 1961 with the rank of Ser-geant Major.
Bill married Katherine French in 1947, and adopted Katherine's daughter by a previous marriage, Judith Ann. Bill and Kay were married 60 years, until Kay's death in 2007. Judith passed away in 2017.
After leaving the Marine Corps, William worked for G.E. , Xerox and Red Coach Realty. After retir-ing from real estate, Bill and Kay enjoyed several years of traveling around the country in their 5th wheel trailer which they named "The Gypsy Wagon", before choosing Hendersonville as their permanent home in 1985.
In Hendersonville, Bill worked for Enterprise Car Rental, as a long distance driver, often with his wife Kay as navigator.
Bill was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels. He was very ac-tive with the Marine Corps league, organizing many events and projects and served as Commandant.
Bill is survived by his daughter, Diana Parks of Hendersonville, NC, his grandsons, Ken of Austin, TX and Mike of Edin-burgh, Scotland, and his great-grandchildren, Jona-than , Catie , Calem , and Nicholas .
A full Military Service will be held at 10:00 am Monday, August 20th at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 1270 Old U.S. Highway 70 West, Black Mountain, NC 28711. Casual dress please.
