HENDERSONVILLE - John "Gary" Owens, 78, of Hendersonville, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Park Ridge Hospital. He was born April 6, 1934, in Whitehall, Ill., the son of Fred Owens and Alice Mae Ryan Owens.
He was a retired veteran of the U. S. Navy where he was a pilot of 21 years flying mainly the A-4 Skyhawk and F-4 Phantom. He served proudly during the Vietnam War and later as a test pilot on the Stencil Ejection Seat project for the F-16 and AV-88 Harrier.
His most enjoyable hobbies included reading, cooking, acting and spending time with family.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Laryon D. Owens, of the home; children, Dayton Owens and wife, Sharon, of Denver, Colo., Alycia Owens, of Hendersonville, Daryck Owens, of Hendersonville, and Mychele O. Taylor and husband, Jason, of San Diego, Calif., and thee grandchildren, Lindsay Owens, Allyson Taylor and Michael Taylor.
Funeral services will be held at a later date in Ashland, Ill.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carolina's ALS Center, 1010 Edgehill Road, Charlotte, NC 28207.
