RUTHERFORDTON-Richard Albert Dahl, 83, of Rutherfordton, died August 13 in the comfort of his home and family. Richard was born on March 14, 1930 in Verona, NJ. He was in the US Naval Reserves from 1948 to 1951. In February 1951 he enlisted and served as an Intelligence and Reconnaissance specialist in the Korean War. Dick, as he became known, graduated from North Park Jr. College, Chicago, IL and received his B.A. in Business from Augustana College, Rock Island, IL. During his subsequent business career, mostly in Human Resources, he worked for Campbell Soup Company in NE & NJ, Singer Corporation in PA & SC, Huffy Corporation in OH and Rhone-Poulenc in GA & NJ. After retiring in 1998, he completed two separate assignments in the Ukraine as a consultant with the Citizens Development Corps. In 1999, Dick returned to Korea with 30 other Korean War veterans for a ceremony in Panmunjom, where the Armistice ending the war was signed in 1953. After moving to Hendersonville, NC in 2001 he was active in Rotary International, Marine Corps League, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Korean War Veterans.

He often went into the schools to tell students about the Korean War and his experiences. He served on the Hendersonville Board of Adjustments and was an active member of First Presbyterian Church. Through the years Dick served as an Elder in the Presbyterian Church and the Official Board of the United Methodist Church. He attended First Baptist Church in Rutherfordton. Music was a very important part of Dick's life. He sang all through high school, college, in numerous church choirs, The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus, Bucks County Choral Society in PA and Cantabile in Hendersonville.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents Ebba Moberg and Leif Dahl, brother Walter Dahl and sister Joanna Thomas.
Dick is survived by his wife of 55 years Donna, son Jeffery and wife Sonya of Highland Village, TX; daughter Judith and husband Charles Bond of Rutherfordton; grandchildren Kirsten, Erik, Jared Dahl, Chad, Matthew, Andrew, David Bond; sister Elizabeth Bonjour, Charlotte, NC, many nieces and nephews and his beloved cats Oscar and Precious.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Hospice who lovingly cared for Dick for more than two years, especially Dr.Romzick, Cindy, Ashley, Melinda, Lori, Terry and his faithful volunteer Linda.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at First Baptist Church, 246 N. Main St., Rutherfordton, NC on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 3:00 PM with Rev. Tim Marsh and Rev. Dean Baughn officiating. A reception/visitation will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 P.M. prior to the service in the Fellowship Hall.
