HENDERSONVILLE – John Elmer Cherry Sr., 88, of Hendersonville passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock.
A native of Vassar, MI, he was a son of the late Theodore and Alexandrene Vasselkovsky Wazdatskey. He was an alumnus of the University of Miami where he received a Bachelors of Art in Business. During WWII, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Santa Fe as part of the Pacific Fleet. Mr. Cherry taught for five years at the Fletcher Academy, and was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist and attended church in Fletcher.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by siblings, Mary Wazdatskey, Paul Wazdatskey, Joe Wazdatskey, Anna Brown, Sophie Oles, Phillip Wazdatskey, Pete Wazdatskey, Lillian Rauch, and Leo Branson.
He is survived by his children, John Cherry Jr. of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Jeanne Lynn Watts and her husband, Edward, of Watkinsville, GA, Jimmy Cherry and his wife, Cheri, of Loma Linda, CA, and Kay Gordon and her husband, Chris, of Saluda; sister, Lillian Rauch of Altamonte Springs, FL; sister-in-law, Barbara Wazdatskey of California; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
No services will be held at this time.
