HICKORY - Paul Wesley "Wes" Dunlap, 83, of Hickory, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, at Catawba Regional Hospice.
Born July 1, 1929, in Hendersonville, he was the son of the late Paul William and Wilma Allen Dunlap.
Mr. Dunlap was a devoted member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Hickory and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean War. He spent most of his career in fabric sales with Quaker Fabric Corp. and was more recently associated with Valdese Weavers.
His most enjoyable hobby was coaching children's basketball teams, which he did for 20 years. He was a much beloved coach to his players and took a personal interest in their lives. He loved spending time at the beach and was a long-time golfer and college basketball enthusiast.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Norma N. Dunlap, of the home; three daughters: Theresa Bailey and husband Bob, of Charlotte, Paula Hardin and husband Bobby, of Hickory, and Deitra Smith and fiancé Joey Carpenter, of Forest City; son, Michael Dunlap and wife Cheryl, of Summerfield; brother, Bobby Dunlap, of Hendersonville; 12 grandchildren: Jennifer Dunlap Christopher Dunlap, Bradley Huffman, Katie Wilson, Eric Collins, Ashley Collins, Kelsey Smith, Coleman Smith, Zachary Smith, Alex Dunlap, Payne Dunlap and Mitchell Dunlap, and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Hickory with Father Bob Ferris officiating. Burial followed at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
