Albert Clark Obituary

(1931-2018)
Dr. Albert Hatcher Clark, 87, Emeritus Professor of Economics and Finance at Georgia State University, who moved to Hendersonville, NC in 2005, most recently a resident of Carolina Village, passed away at the Elizabeth House on March 15, 2018, with his loving wife of 60 years, Edith Lloyd Clark, at his side.
Born in Americus, Georgia on February 9, 1931, Dr. Clark was the son of the late George Amos Clark and Maida Louise Hatcher Clark. He earned his B.B.A and M.B.A from the University of Georgia where he was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi for both his undergraduate and graduate work. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business where he was both a Ford Foundation Fellow and an S.S. Huebner Fellow. After completing his education, he accepted a teaching position at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA, where he was instrumental in creating the Finance Department within the School of Business at the University, and assumed the role of Department Chair for many years.
Dr. Clark served in the US Air Force on active duty from 1952-1954 at both Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH and as the Base Budget and Accounting Officer at Yakota AFB in Tokyo, Japan. He remained in the reserves until 1960, retiring as a First Lieutenant.
His faith was a central part of his life. In 1957, while in graduate school in Philadelphia, Al met Edie through the Tabernacle Presbyterian Church Young Adult Group, and for the next 61 years he served as a faithful member of Shallowford Presbyterian Church PCUSA, Atlanta, GA and Trinity Presbyterian Church PCUSA, Hendersonville, NC as an ordained Deacon and Elder. At Shallowford he served on a Pastor Nominating Committee, the Sanctuary Building Committee, and for many years he taught "The Mighty Acts of God" Adult Sunday School Class. He served a valuable member on Finance Committees at both churches.
As avid travelers, Al and Edie were able to visit all seven continents before his progressive blindness ultimately restricted his activities.
Al is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Edie, three daughters: Cynthia Anne Clark and her husband Frank of Oxford, NC, Kathryn Clark Wells and her husband Andrew of Flat Rock, NC, and Constance Clark Vaughan of Jacksonville, FL; eight grandchildren: Max and Maggie Clark; Annie, Katie, and Andrew Jr. Wells; and Connor, Jacob, and Gillian Vaughan; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Eric Byrd and his staff at Carolina Mountain Internal Medicine, Christina Welch and her colleagues at Four Seasons Hospice, and Compassionate Home Care for their loving attention to Dr. Clark.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 900 Blythe Street, Hendersonville, NC, 28791, officiated by the Reverend Dr. J. Mark Stanley and the Reverend Dwight Christenbury.
