H. Dean Humphrey, 80
H. Dean Humphrey, 80, of Boonville, passed away at Riverdell Care Center on Friday, November 2, 2012.
Dean was born in Topeka, Kansas, on May 17, 1932, to Homer Harry and Nora Shaffer Humphrey. He graduated from Holton (Kansas) High School in 1950. After serving in the United States Air Force for four years, Dean pursued a degree in journalism at the University of Kansas. Upon his graduation from KU in 1958, Dean was hired by KCMO in Kansas City, where he worked in both radio and television broadcasting for eight years.
Pairing his interests in journalism and aviation, Dean worked for the rest of his career in public relations and media for various aeronautics companies, retiring from Cessna Aircraft Company in 1993 as its vice president for public relations. During his employment at Cessna, Dean helped create the Special Olympics
Airlift, which brought athletes from around the country to the games.
Dean is survived by Pat, his wife of fifty years, who resides in Boonville; his daughters Lynn Humphrey (Jeff Martin) of Boonville and Amy Humphrey (Joe Hayes) of Lone Elm; two grandsons, Asher and Declan Humphrey-Martin, of Boonville; a sister, Jean Haag, of Hays, Kansas, and a brother, Wendell Humphrey, of Topeka. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Richard Alan Humphrey.
A memorial service will be held at eleven o'clock on Tuesday, November 20, at the First Presbyterian Church in Boonville. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church of Boonville or to Special Olympics.
