Lloyd Leopold Lenz, 78, died Saturday, December 7, 2013 in his home in Hyannis, Nebraska.

He was born February 5, 1935 in Bradshaw, NE to Richard and Cora (Peetzke) Lenz and was baptized in the Zion Lutheran Church near Hampton, NE. In 1941 the family relocated to a farm near Lone Elm, Missouri where he attended Zion Lutheran Church & School and was confirmed in 1949.
Lloyd married Gladys LaVerne (Toellner) Lenz on May 14th, 1955 in Lone Elm, Missouri. They made their first home on a dairy farm in Prairie Home, MO. In 1966 they moved to Milwaukee, WI while Lloyd attended the Lutheran Lay Training Institute. In 1968 he accepted the call to the Sandhills Ministry and his family moved to Mullen, Nebraska and then to Hyannis in 1971. He began his ministry by "going up and down the road and knocking on doors". Services were held in many rural locations before the dedication of Swede Valley Lutheran Church south of Ashby in 1970. Serving the Sandhills for over 30 years, he also served the congregations of Faith Lutheran north of Hyannis, Grace Lutheran in Merriman, and Bingham Lutheran Church.
After retiring in 2000, Lloyd continued his missionary work in St. Petersburg, Russia in 2000-2001. Lloyd was also a gifted and talented woodworker. His handiwork extends throughout the region. Overseeing the construction of the Shepherd of the Hills Church in Hyannis was one of his final projects. During his retirement years, he became an avid fisherman, often sharing the bounty of his successes with family and friends.
He is survived by his children, Susan (Dwayne) Schwarz of Pinckneyville, IL, Alan (Lisa) Lenz of Grand Island, NE, Timothy (Jill) Lenz of Tarkio, MO, Sharon (Rick) Brening of Lincoln, NE, PeterJohn (Mitzi) Lenz, of Lincoln, NE, and Daniel (Nora) Lenz of Eagle, NE;16 grandchildren, Eric Schwarz, Nathan Schwarz, Rebecca Preston, Zachary Lenz, Jonathan Lenz, Amanda Lenz, Kristin Bilyeu, Matthew Lenz, Natalie Hitch, Shae Brening, Erin Lenz, Tyler Lenz, Toni Willnerd, Lane Hinn, Whitney Hinn, and Uriah Lenz; 7 great grandchildren; and his brother, Richard Jr. and sister, Lavill Morton of Boonville, MO. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Gladys and brother, Eldon.
Funeral services was held Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Hyannis. Reverend Andy Safarik and Reverend Russ Sommerfeld will officiate. Memorial services and burial will be held Thursday, December 12, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church and Cemetery in Lone Elm, Missouri.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Festival of Hope, Lutherans in Africa, and Orphan Grain Train.
