Robert Gerard Askren, 90
Robert Gerard Askren, age 90, passed away May 8, 2013.
Robert was born in Atchison, Kansas on September 19, 1922. He graduated from Atchison High School. He enlisted in the United States Air Corps in 1941. Robert served in Australia with the 42nd Troop Carrier Squadron and later at Davis Monthan Field in Tucson, Arizona. He married Frances Kaufman in 1943.
Bob and his family moved to Liberty, Missouri in 2008. Bob owned The Commercial Photo Co. in Kansas City, Missouri. He specialized in industrial, commercial, and aerial photography. He retired in 1990. After retirement, Bob volunteered at the Clay County Archive and Historical Society in Liberty, Missouri. He was instrumental in securing the original glass negatives of the early photographer Jacob Hicks. After cleaning and restoration work on the glass negatives, he presented them to the Clay County Museum. He contributed early photographs of Kansas City to the Missouri Room at the Kansas City Public Library. Bob was a member and Elder Emeritus at the Liberty Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He was a member of the Professional Photographers of Kansas City and the National Photographers Association. He was a past member of the Kansas City Sertoma Club. He was a member of the Magic Lantern Society of the United States.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Ada and Edmund Askren and his son Mark Kaufman Askren. He is survived by his wife Frances Askren and children Elizabeth Robinson (Greg) Columbia, MO, Kenton Askren (Linda) Boonville, MO, David Askren (Jane) Vero Beach, FL, grandchildren James Askren, Christy McCauley (Andrew), Jennie Askren, Elizabeth Tate (Ryan), Jillian Askren, Amy Askren, Annie Robinson, Alex Robinson, and great-grandchildren Lilly McCauley and Grayson Tate. He is also survived by his brother Edmund Askren, Jr. of Junction City, Kansas. Private memorial services planned.
