Wilfred (Jerry) Monk, 91, of Boonville, passed from this life August 13, 2012 at his home after a brief illness.
Mr. Monk was born February 3, 1921, to Jesse and Mildred Monk in Whitefish, MT. He moved to Anaconda in 1925, where he attended the Daily School, Junior High, and graduated in 1938 from Anaconda High School. Jerry worked as a bellboy at the Montana Hotel and was one of the "office boys" in the general office at the Anaconda Smelter. He went back to the hotel as the night clerk in 1941. Mr. Monk enlisted in the Navy, August 1942. He was selected for pilot training and was commissioned as an Ensign Naval Aviator in 1944. On August 5, 1945, he married Margaret Louise Burns. Mr. Monk served in the Navy as a flight instructor until 1950. After the service, he attended the University of Oklahoma, where he was a member of the Sigma Gamma Epsilon fraternity. He received a BS. andMS in Geology. After college, he moved to Sidney, Nebraska to work for the Ohio Oil (Marathon Oil) Company. In 1966, he left Marathon and moved to a farm near Pilot Grove, Missouri in Cooper County. Besides farming, he taught Geology at Kemper Military School, served two terms on the Pilot Grove School Board, and was a substitute teacher for many years. In 1974, he was elected Western District Judge on the Cooper County Court. He was re-elected in 1976 and 1978. He returned to the "oil patch" in 1979 as a consultant to different oil companies. In 1990, Jerry moved back to Missouri and retired in 2009.
Jerry was preceded in death by Margaret, his wife of sixty-six years, his parents and sisters, Winifred and Patricia; his two oldest children-Barbara Clare and Walter Monk; and his great-grandchild-Jeffrey Binning. Surviving children are: Robert Monk (Izena, dec.); Nancy McReynolds (Steve); Julie Binning (Don); Sarah Friedrich (Steve); and George Monk (Lisa). He is also survived by his brother-John Monk of Columbus, OH; fifteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Monk will be at 10:00 AM Saturday, August 18, 2012 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pilot Grove. The body will be cremated.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Friday, August 17, 2012 at the church, with a prayer service at 5:00 PM.
Memorials are suggested to the Howard County Hospice.
