Lillian Fernita Meyer, 91, of Prairie Home, passed away Wednesday, February 26, at California Care Center in California, MO.
Lillian was born on May 23, 1922, in Sandy Hook, Missouri, the only child of John Phillip and Emma Turner Wyss. Lillian began first grade at age five, attending the Sandy Hook School. She graduated from Jamestown High School in 1939.
On May 4, 1941, she married Ben Dorsey Meyer at Cedron Assumption Catholic Church. She then began the busy life of a farm wife, helping with everyday activities such as scooping grain, separating livestock, butchering, churning butter, raising a large garden each year, and canning or freezing the produce. In early years, homegrown fruit meant canning jellies, jams and preserves. She was also known for her delicious cinnamon rolls. For several years she raised chickens to sell.
Lillian made much of her own clothing, as well as that of her children and, in later years, her two grandsons. She was active in the local PTA and a monthly ladies' farm club called the Carlos Willing Workers. For several years she collected donations for the Prairie Home Fair. Lillian was organist for many years at the Cedron Catholic Church. She and Ben became members of Annunciation Catholic Church in California when the Cedron Church closed.
Lillian was preceded in death by her father in 1981, her mother in 2001, and by her husband, Ben, in 1994. She is survived by one daughter, Mary Ellen, of Prairie Home (formerly of Mexico, MO), one son, Dwight (Mary Ann), of Prairie Home, and two grandsons, Justin Meyer of Kansas City, and Shawn Meyer (Chelsea), Prairie Home.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, February 28, at Davis Funeral Chapel in Boonville, beginning with a prayer service at 5:00. Funeral mass will be Saturday, March 1, 10:00 a.m., at Annunciation Catholic Church in California, MO. Burial will be in the Annunciation Church Cemetery.
