Edmund Kendrick Obituary

KENDRICK, Edmund H. Of Blue Hill, ME, formerly of Wenham, MA, died peacefully December 12, 2009, at home, age 88. His wife of 66 years, Mayotta Southworth, passed away just 25 days after Ed. They left two sons, Ned and Mel, their wives and five grandchildren. Ed graduated early from Yale University in December 1942, receiving his commission as an Ensign in the Navy. He served as a gunnery officer on two destroyers from January 1943 until February 1946. A German U-Boat off Italy sank his first ship, USS Bristol. Home on a brief leave, he married Mayotta on February 12, 1944. He then served aboard the USS Stockton for the rest of the war in numerous Pacific operations from New Guinea to Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Upon return to civilian life, Ed attended Harvard Law School and practiced law at Dane, Howe & Kendrick in Boston from 1948 to 1958. He then moved to Fiduciary Trust Company in Boston where he retired as the Senior Vice President in 1986 but continued to serve as a trustee and member of the Executive Committee until age 80. Ed and Mayotta shared a passion for sailing, crossing the Atlantic together on the brigantine Yankee in 1947. Their sailing adventures took them all over the world, most notably on their sloop Penobscot in Europe and as far east as the Black Sea and Cyprus. At age 74 Ed joined four friends on a sail from Newfoundland to Ireland. A funeral was held on December 21, 2009 at the First Congregational Church in Deer Isle, ME. Contributions may be made in Ed's memory to the Deer Isle Sunset Church, P.O. Box 292, Deer Isle, ME 04627.
