GARLAND, DANIEL CHARLES - Boston
Garland, Daniel Charles Died unexpectedly at the age of 42 on January 26, in Florida, during a business trip. He was the much beloved husband of Shannon MacDonald, sister of Jill Garland and son of Charles Preston Garland and Ann Bush Garland. Dan was born September 25, 1972, in Portland, Maine. When he was four years old, his family moved from Falmouth to Saco. He graduated from Deerfield Academy, Connecticut College and Babson College's Olin Graduate School of Management. In 2007, he married Shannon, a physician at the Massachusetts General Hospital. In January 2011, Daniel became President of Garland Manufacturing Company and represented the 6th generation of his family to lead the small manufacturing business in Saco. Dan had a keen intellect and a sharp wit. He had a remarkable memory for detail – history, current events, the world of business, people and places. He was an expert skier and captained his college ski team. As an avid fan of the Boston Bruins, he generously shared his tickets with family, friends and pediatric cancer patients. Dan cherished long Sunday mornings reading with his wife, new restaurants and cooking for family and friends, especially with his commercial smoker. In addition to spending time on Lake Wesserunset in East Madison, Maine with his close friends, he loved traveling and spending time on the beaches of the small island of Vieques, Calvin and Hobbes and homemade Chex mix. Most of all, he passionately loved his wife. Their mutual love and companionship gave him the greatest happiness in his adult life. Dan was diagnosed with a mitochondrial disorder, Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy, at the age of 32. Though he suffered acutely from vision loss due to this disease and complications from treatment, he recovered most of his vision and overcame many set backs over subsequent years and was able to find much enjoyment in life and gave tremendous joy to those who knew him. Dan is survived by his wife, Shannon; parents, Charles and Ann Garland; and sister, Jill Garland and her fiance, Jay Amster. He is also survived by his extended MacDonald/O'Connell families, including his much beloved nephew and godson, Keegan O'Connell, and Keegan's brothers, Declan and Aedan and sister, Maeve, and their parents, Thomas and Lara O'Connell. Wake will take place on Thursday, February 5th from 5-8 p.m. at Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home on 465 Centre Street, NEWTON, MA 02458.
