BRYANT BARNARD Obituary

Barnard, Bryant, MD
Of Wenham, passed away on August, 17, 2013. Born in 1936 in Montclair NJ, to Frank George Barnard and Louise Stauffen Barnard, he was a graduate of Fountain Valley School (CO), Dartmouth College '58, and Cornell University Medical College. Much loved husband of Doris (Krebs), he is also survived by his sister, Carol Ottenberg (Simon); three sons, Robb (Doug), Scott (Kristina) and Timothy (Kate); and three grandsons, Ross, Peter and Caden. Bryant served as a surgeon in the US Navy onboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence stationed off Vietnam, and at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth NH. As a urologist, Bryant opened North Shore Urological Associates in 1971, and developed that practice until his retirement in December 1997. During his tenure at Beverly and Addison Gilbert Hospitals, he was elected Chief of Surgery and President of the Medical Staff of Beverly Hospital. He was also President of the Evelyn Lilly Lutz Foundation and President of the Massachusetts Association of Practicing Urologists. After retirement, he continued to be a Trustee of Northeast Health Systems, which includes Beverly, Addison Gilbert and Hunt Hospitals, and traveled on numerous surgical mission trips to Cameroon and Kosovo. Bryant was also a longtime member of the Miles River Marsh Rats and an avid outdoorsman; he traveled the world with Dorie to fish and bird watch. At home, he was an accomplished woodworker, pilot, gardener, conservationist, and philanthropist. In the past decade, much of his time and energy went into design and implementation of the Iron Rail Cemetery and Arboretum. Visiting hours will be held at the Campbell-Lee, Moody, Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, NORTH BEVERLY, Location, on Friday, August 23 from 4-7pm. A Celebration of his Life will be held at the First Church in Wenham, 1 Arbor Street, Wenham, on Saturday, September 7, at 11AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. I am deeply saddened by the death of Bryant. Needless to say, he was great fun to work with and a trusted colleague. He was also a champion of women physicians and worked to promote them. On a personal note I was touched when he even looked into getting a secure locations for our handbags! He could not have been more empathetic on the death of my husband and had come to the house with the best smoked fish I ever tasted along with words of encouragement and sympathy. My deepest sympathy on his loss to his wife and family.
