Yacubian, Capt. Lawrence G.
Of Orlean, Virginia, U.S. Army National Guard Capt. Lawrence Grinnell Yacubian, 38, of Orlean, Va. and formerly of Westport, Mass., died unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013. "Rooster," as he was known to his family and friends, was an accomplished horseman, having trained in Switzerland as a young man. He competed successfully at major horseshows throughout the Eastern United States. His strong commitment to the service of our country led him to volunteer for the Virginia National Guard in 1999, where he proudly served with distinction in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as an infantry officer, earning a Bronze Star
and several Distinguished Service medals. He was made company commander and was recently commended for, among other things, his leadership during the presidential inauguration. Capt. Yacubian's love for his country was only surpassed by his love for his daughter, Lily McKee Yacubian. He enjoyed nothing more than spending time with Lily, family and friends, telling stories about his childhood, which was spent at his family's farm in Westport. He was well read and had a strong wit, qualities that contributed to his graduation from the historic Moses Brown Quaker School in Providence, R.I., and Boston University with honors. Soon after graduating from college, he adopted the open meadows of Virginia as his home. He is survived by his wife, Nina Carter McKee; his daughter, Lily McKee Yacubian; his parents, Capt. Lawrence and Susan Almy Yacubian of Punta Gorda, Fla., and formerly of Westport, Mass.; his brother, Job Almy Yacubian; his sister-in-law, Emily Sommerhoff and nephew, Jesse Quinn Yacubian of New York; as well as many, many friends. A memorial service will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7, at Leeds Episcopal Church outside Markham, Va. about one hour west of Washington, DC. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Moses Brown School, 250 Lloyd Ave., Providence, R.I. 02906, or Leeds Episcopal Church, 4332 Leeds Manor Road, Markham, Va. 22643.
