CARLSON, Conrad H., Cdr. USN, Ret. Originally of Cambridge, MA, passed away peacefully on 02/28 at age 93. He leaves 2 daughters; Jeanne Rutigliano, her husband Joe, and his 3 granddaughters, Juliet, Joanna and Jenna of Lyme, CT; and Diane Carlson and her partner Dewey Fraser of Jamaica Plain. He was pre-deceased by Alice Lindgren Carlson, his wife of 62 years, and his brother Walter Carlson. He leaves 8 nieces and nephews. Conrad was a career Naval officer, entering Harvard in 1934, graduating from Annapolis in 1940, and also earning a BSEE from MIT. He served on destroyers in the South Pacific during WWII
, was captain of the USS Brownson, had a post-war tour of duty in Oslo, Norway as a participant in the Military Assistance Advisory Group to NATO, and served at the Pentagon until retiring in 1962. He then joined Raytheon, and later continued his vocation by becoming a private school math teacher. He spent many happy retirement years at Webster Lake in Franklin, NH, where he continued to teach part-time, volunteered with the local Red Cross, sailed, skied, and bowled, was an eager reader, always an avid golfer, and a dedicated sports fan of all Boston teams. A highlight of his retirement was attending his 65th reunion at the US Naval Academy. Active up until his final day, as a resident of Southgate in Shrewsbury, he had many friends and participated in a wide range of community activities. He will be missed by all.
