POPE, Gardner Wheeler Departed on January 4, 2013, at age 89, following a short illness. The long-term resident of Brooksby Village in Peabody, MA, and the loving husband for 65 years of the former Barbara Kirmayer Pope, is succeeded by daughter Cheryl Pope Handel of Los Angeles, CA; son Dana Pope and his wife, Carolyn Pope, of Westwood, MA; son Todd Pope of Westwood, MA; five grand-children, Jeffrey Handel, Lindsay Pope, Cecilie Pope, Laurian Pope, and June Pillard and her husband, Jean Pillard; great-grandson Jayden Pillard; sister Priscilla H. Pope of Stoughton, MA; sister-in-law Virginia Slayton of Bridgewater, NH; and brother-in-law Donald Dolben and his wife Martha of Concord, MA. Mr. Pope was born in 1923 in Brockton, MA, the oldest child of Rachel Wheeler and Russell Howland Pope. He attended Bridgewater High School and graduated from Harvard University
in 1944 (but as a member of the Class of 1945), with a B.S. Degree in Electronic Physics, and served in the U.S. Navy
during World War II
. Throughout his professional career, as both an engineer and head of technical publications departments, Mr. Pope was involved in the cutting edge of technology. He served as an engineer with Jackson & Mooreland Consulting Engineers working as a consultant to M.I.T. during the Apollo Moon Landings; in nuclear safety at Stone & Webster; documenting deep-freeze technology at CTI Cryogenics; in Honeywell's ElectroOptics Division; and as a consultant to GTE before retiring. He also served in a number of volunteer positions, including Cub Scout Troop Leader; as an Institutional Representative for the Boy Scouts; a member of the Board and Chief Trustee of the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Malden, MA; and a member of the Standing Committee of the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Wellesley Hills, MA. He was also an enthusiastic tennis player, cross-country skiier, and hiker, played the piano, and enjoyed reading, especially historical writings. A close family interment will be held in Summer 2013 on Bridgewater Hill, NH.
