NANCY HILL

HILL, Nancy Died on May 5, 2013, at home in Stratham, NH, with her family, at peace, after an extendedillness. She was born in Boston, MA on October 16, 1936, the daughter of Francis and Laura Moore, and grew up in Brookline, MA. After attending the Windsor School, she went on to Bryn Mawr College. Following marriage to Lucius Hill, she graduated from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. The family settled in Exeter, NH in 1965 where her husband began his practice of surgery and raising children became her main focus. As the children grew, Nancy obtained teacher certification and taught 3rd grade in Exeter for 7 years. Her career progressed after she received her Master's degree from UNH and worked as Reading Specialist at the Brackett School on Pease AFB until its closure. With a further degree from Boston College, she became school psychologist at the Portsmouth Middle School where she evaluated and planned remediation for children with learning disabilities. She retired in 1999. Her loves, in addition to family and teaching, were tennis, knitting and family summers at a small cottage on a small island in Pocasset, MA, which could be reached only by small boat from a rocky beach. She also had a more than passing interest in the arts which led to involvement in the Shipyard Dance Project in Portsmouth. As a result, she was a co-recipient of a grant from the NE Foundation for the Arts for a community-building arts project. This led to the formation of the Portsmouth Poet Laureate Program which was co-founded by Nancy and she continued as chairman for the next ten years. The program became a model for other communities and involved projects developed by each Laureate as well as a very successful monthly poetry reading. Other community activities included service on the advisory board of the Currier Museum of Manchester, NH. She is survived by her husband, Lucius T. Hill Jr., MD, of Stratham, NH, her children, Lucius Hill III of Westwood, MA and his wife, Wendy, Elizabeth Hill of New York City and her husband, David Hainsworth, Peter Hill of Houston, TX and Susannah Hill of Menlo Park, CA and her husband Philip Pattarelli, MD. Grandchildren are Harry Hill, Charles Hill and Lydia Hill all of Westwood, MA, Nicholas Hill of New Market, MD and Andrew Pattarelli of Menlo Park, CA. Also surviving are siblings, Peter B. Moore of North Haven, CT., Sarah Warren of Grafton, VT., Caroline Tripp of New York City and Francis Moore Jr., MD of Medfield, MA. Services will be held at the Exeter Congregational Church, 21 Front St., Exeter, NH at 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 25, 2013. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Portsmouth Poet Laureate Program, PO Box 1196, Portsmouth, NH 03802. For more information, please visit www.brewittfuneralhome.com
