McELROY, William Bill 89, of East Dennis passed away peacefully on March 6, 2014 with his three children by his side. He was the husband of the late Eileen (Powers) McElroy who predeceased him in 2009. They had a loving marriage of 56 years. Bill was born July 18, 1924 in Newton, MA to Joseph and Dorothy (Cheetham) McElroy. He was the second of four children. Bill enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served during WWII
as an Aviation Radioman Second Class until he was honorably discharged in December of 1945. He fell in love with and married Eileen Powers in 1953. They were the proud parents of three children. After completing his military service, Bill obtained a degree in Business Administration and enjoyed a successful 35 year career in the insurance business while raising his family in Concord, MA. He was an active member of the Concord Minutemen and participated in Revolutionary War reenactments, parades, and costume balls with his wife and friends. Upon retirement in 1988 Bill and Eileen moved to East Dennis. Bill meant the world to his family and filled their lives with comfort, laughter and joy. He enjoyed woodworking, chair caning, wood carving, and gardening. His greatest joy came from helping anyone that needed assistance and making a complete stranger smile and laugh. Bill touched the hearts of everyone he met and will be forever missed. Bill was predeceased by his two brothers Robert McElroy and Warren McElroy. He is survived by his three children, Anne Vaughn and husband John of Dennis, William McElroy of East Dennis, and Carol Malone and husband Brian of Marstons Mills; two grand children, Christopher Flynn and wife Whitney-Lehr of Minneapolis, and Emily Flynn of New York; and sister Ethel Jones of Newton. A private service and burial was held on March 11th 2014 at the National Cemetery in Bourne where he was forever reunited with his beloved Eileen.
