ROSCOE TRIMMIER Obituary

TRIMMIER, Roscoe, Jr. 71, Pioneering Ropes and Gray Attorney of Miami, Florida, formerly of Brookline, died July 30, 2015 following a brief illness. Dear father of Leigh Merritt and beloved grandfather "Pops" of Peyton Merritt. He is also survived by his devoted companion, Donna Zerwitz, his mother, Susie Trimmier; brother, Donald and sister-in-law Linda Trimmier, son-in-law Ishmail Merritt and former wife, Gail Snowden. He was born July 22, 1944 in Charlotte, North Carolina to Susie and Roscoe Trimmier, Sr. Trimmier attended segregated schools in Charlotte where he was an outstanding student, receiving the All Star Scholars Award from West Charlotte High School. With the encouragement of a mentor, he applied to Harvard University in Cambridge, MA which accepted him into Harvard College (class of 1966). Donald shared that "Roscoe was the best brother anyone could have, and when we were growing up, he impressed upon me the importance of education. I could go to him for help with anything, homework, and personal advice." Following his U. S. Army service as a Lieutenant from 1965-68, he returned to Cambridge to complete Harvard College and attend Harvard Law School, from which he graduated in 1974. During his final year of law school, he and his wife were delighted to welcome a beautiful daughter, Leigh Snowden Trimmier. Leigh said "My father is my hero and I am so grateful that he taught me the value of education, professionalism, high standards, hard work, dedication and sacrifice to achieve your goals." In 1974, Trimmier was hired by Ropes & Gray LLP in Boston, MA and rose through the ranks to become the first African-American partner at the firm in 1983. The historic significance of shattering racial barriers in a period when there were few African-American partners at Boston law firms was clear. Spending his entire distinguished career at the firm, Trimmier served as Chair of the firm's Litigation Department, the head of the Environmental Practice Group, and as a member of the Hiring Committee and the Associates Committee. He was an accomplished trial lawyer involved in a variety of litigation matters for corporate clients, utilities, high-technology entities, and governmental authorities in state and federal courts. He was at outstanding leader at the firm, retiring in 2009. Trimmier has received several awards: The Best Lawyers in America, Massachusetts Super Lawyers and Fellow, American College of Trial Lawyers. Trimmier was Chair of the American Bar Association's Standing Committee on Federal Judiciary, Vice Chair of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine, and a member of: the Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association, American College of Trial Lawyers, Boston Bar Association as well as an Overseer of the N.E. Medical Center Hospitals. There will be private Burial Services at Forest Hills Cemetery and a Memorial Service will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to the Roscoe Trimmier Fund at the Boston Foundation, 75 Arlington Street, Boston, MA 02116. www.tbf.org. Arrangements Davis Funeral Home of BOSTON. Sorry to hear of Roscoe's passing. My mother recalls times with Roscoe Jr, Donald and their father visiting aunt Pearl in Charlotte when they where young. The years have gone by but sweet memories still burn in our hearts. It shall be a great day when we meet again. We have one surviving great aunt who would like to contact Susie. Please reply to email left in this guestbook.

To Donna and family, I was so saddened to learn of Roscoe's passing as I was just talking fondly about him last week. He left you way too soon, may memories of light and laughter sustain you during this most difficult of times, sending prayers to all.

Roscoe was a true gentleman and a highly respected lawyer and mentor. He taught me that you didn't have to be part of the 'old boy network' to have a successful legal career in Boston. He will be sadly missed by a lot of people.

Leigh,
My heartfelt condolences to you and your family. I followed your father two years later to Harvard from West Charlotte High, and we shared the same mentor, Julian W. Pyles. Roscoe offered invaluable support, for which I remain grateful.

Very saddened to hear of Roscoe's passing. We were classmates, the mighty class of 1962 of West Charlotte Senior High School and called each other cousin, as we actually shared mutual cousins through marriage, (Isiah (Monk) and John (Toddy) Patterson. Rest in Peace. I am so sorry I never saw you again since graduation. Prayers and peace to Ms. Sue and Donald.

It was truly an honor and a privilege to have you as my first boss at my first job in the "real world". Now, 30 years later, I am both smiling and tearing up as I reflect upon the many memories I have of working for a man with integrity, a man who was my first mentor and a man who was my friend. Thank you for the lessons you taught me and the friendship you gave me. I miss you.

Dear Donna and family, I was so saddened to hear of Roscoe's passing. Many years ago early in my career I rented you and Roscoe a small house on Beacon Hill. You and Jan T, your former landlord (who lost her battle with cancer three years ago), are part of my history. My thoughts are with you. Sally W, Boston

I had the distinct honor of meeting Roscoe many years ago when he served on an executive committee at United Community Planning Corporation where I worked at the time. Over the years, I have come to know and admire him even more as the companion of my dear friend, Donna. To Donna and the Trimmier, Snowden and Merritt families I offer my deepest condolences and prayers for peace in your hearts.

It is still so hard to believe that you are really gone. Life and the world are so different without you. There are no words to convey the gratitude, do justice for the bond we share nor express the pain and loss we feel. You are irreplaceable to me, your grandchild, family & friends. We will be stewards of your memory, legacy, lessons and message. I will always remember your passion for life, leadership, bravery and courage despite adversity and challenge. I am grateful for the quality time we had together and that the last words we exchanged were "I love you".
"May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine upon your face. And rains fall upon your face. Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand. And may the wings of destiny carry you aloft to dance with the stars." Irish blessing

I was so saddened to learn about Roscoe's passing. He and I were friends at Ropes & Gray for nearly 35 years, and we shared many laughs on many topics. I particularly remember once in the 1990s (before the firm had entirely shed its "white shoe" reputation) when he, I and a woman partner were taking an elevator down from a firm meeting and he deadpanned "Well, here we are, a typical cross-section of Ropes and Gray." He was an officer, a gentleman, and a wonderful partner & friend, and we'll miss him greatly.
