ANTHONY P. FRENCH

1920 - 2017

FRENCH, Anthony P. Of Cambridge, formerly of Arlington, February 3, 2017, emeritus professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was born in Brighton, England on November 19,1920. Beloved husband of Dorothy Jensen-French and the late Naomi(Livesay)French. Father of Martin French and Gillian Peck.Grandfather of Sara French.Step father of Peter, Christine, Kathryn and Lisa.French was a graduate of Cambridge University,England.During the war he came to Los Alamos.When the War ended, he returned to the UK, where he spent a couple of years at the newly formed Atomic Energy Research Establishment. He later joined the faculty at Cambridge, where he conducted his research at Cavendish and became a Fellow and Director of Studies in Natural Sciences at Pembroke College, Cambridge. In 1955, French arrived at the University of South Carolina, where he was made chairman of the physics department. He left South Carolina in 1962 to take a faculty position in the MIT Physics Department, where he had been until his retirement in 1991. A funeral service will be held in Christ Church Zero Garden St. Cambridge on Thursday, February 9 at 11AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited.
