So very sorry to hear of Charlie's passing. He worked closely with my late husband, Paul Keough, of the EPA. Paul admired Charlie for his intelligence, steadfastness and most of all, his winning personality. I had the pleasure of meeting Charlie several times, and he was always gracious and warm - a real gentleman. Please accept my condolences.

My deepest condolences to the Button family for your great loss. If anyone ever had the right to be full of himself, it was Charlie. But he never was and that is what made him so special. I will always remember him as being a great guy, levelheaded, and always ready to tell a joke or tip one back. He certainly made the best of life's journey. He will be sorely missed.

Many an afternoon Charlie and could be found sitting at my family's kitchen table with our Latin or physics books open to the homework lesson. Charlie got me through physics, in fact he was always my lab partner. He was so patient, an excellent teacher.
On a Friday afternoon, if our class was having a dance, we would decorate the gym, along with many of our classmates. I so clearly remember one afternoon he used an electrical wire to balance while perched on the top of an extended ladder. Over my shoulder I heard, " jacqui, pull me down. Use both hands, jerk hard." He was receiving an electric shock. He was so calm, thinking clearly, giving me precise directions. He always thought like a scientist.
In our first year of college, he talked me into climbing Mt. Washington with his Tufts Mountain climbing club. In my girlie, girlie tennis shoes, I followed him for hours. He loved the day; I was miserable, wondering how I ever agreed to this. He was a big influence in my life.
I have a million fond memories and wonderful stories about Charlie. The highlight was when he ended up in the hospital and met the love of his life, Sharie. When he talked about his nurse, his eyes lit up.
As I type, I'm sitting at a beautiful golf course in Palm Desert, listening to the birds sing, with no other ambient sound, reminiscing. My heart is broken; he was far too young.
His family and friends have been blessed to have such an extraordinary soul in their lives.

To Shari and all the Button Family, I am so sorry for the loss of Charlie, he was an extraordinary man. I have such warm memories of him. He was such a giving and dedicated person. I remember him educating me about sidewalk and street excavation when I was on the City Council and our trips to various street sites to show me first hand examples. He was truly dedicated to his work on behalf of the public and was a loving caring family man and friend. I am grateful for his friendship and will miss him so much. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
