ANTONIO de Castro Obituary

de CASTRO, Antonio P. Antonio (Tony) Pinto de Castro died on November 16, 2017 at the Riverbend Nursing Facility in South Natick, MA. He was 87 years old. Tony was born on May 15, 1930 to Antonio and Maria de Castro in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. Shortly thereafter, the family returned to Portugal where Tony spent much of his childhood. After World War II, they returned to the United States where Tony attended and graduated from Jefferson High School in Rochester,NY. He married Florence Teresi in 1952 and attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He graduated from MIT in 1955 with a degree in architecture and then spent three years with the United States Air Force, deployed to the Azores in Portugal. Upon completion of active service in 1958, Tony returned to the Boston area, where he became an architect and partner at Samuel Glaserand Partners. Professionally, he was known for his innovative design of churches and schools, and was particularly proud of his design of the pavilion and facilities for the celebrants when Pope John Paul II held a papal mass on the Boston Common in 1979. Also in the 1970's,Tony was an active member of St. Paul's Parish in Wellesley, MA where he served as the Scoutmaster of Troop 186 for over 5 years, cherishing his time spent in the outdoors with the group. In 1982, Tony married Betsy Nelson and they created deCastro Nelson Associates, where Tony spent the rest of his professional life. Tony was the loving father of six children Dona (Tom) Lyons; Deborah (Paul) Brewer; David (Tim); Daniel; Donald (Debbie) and Nelson (Sarah); and the proud grandfather of 11 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Tony was an artist and avid cook, enjoyed fishing and time at the beach, and especially loved gathering with his large and loving family. He is survived by his sister, Margie, his wife, Betsy, his children, and his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Connie, Mary, America, and Jack. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 28th at 11AM at St. Anthony's Church in Cambridge, MA. Along with his love of birds, Tony also looked forward to his many visits to the Vineyard, so in lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary on Martha's Vineyard. This wonderful sanctuary is part of the Mass Audubon Society. Rogers & Hutchins Funeral Homes Arlington & Cambridge
