SHERMAN WOLF Obituary

WOLF, Sherman Melvin 86, died peacefully at his home Friday, March 9, 2012. He was the devoted father of Scott and his wife Hiroko Mochizuki of Beverly Hills, CA; Steve and his wife Michelle of Wayland; and Julie of Newton. He was the cherished grandfather of Jennifer, Russell and Bryant Wolf and loving brother of Myron Wolf and the late Edith Friedlander. He was the chief ball tosser for his beloved dog Enzo. Sherman was a 53-year Master Mason of The Consolidated Lodge. Sherman began his business career at age 16 repairing newly invented televisions for Jordan Marsh. He furthered his training in the Navy serving in World War II and the Korean War as an Electronic Technician Second Class and applied that training to establish Two-Way Radio Engineering, Inc., which provided and serviced all of greater-Boston's police departments and taxi companies with two-way radios. In the early 1960s, Sherman founded Zip-Call, Inc., which became the largest pocket paging company in New England, supplying all of the major Boston hospitals and trades. His innovations and breakthroughs led the industry and advanced the services provided. When no bank would offer financing, Sherman saw the potential of an outdoor music shed in Mansfield, Massachusetts and agreed to co-develop the Great Woods Center amphitheater and later the Harborlights Pavilion in Boston, both projects becoming models for similar facilities throughout the country. Since 1986, Great Woods, now known as the Comcast Center, has provided enjoyment to millions of people in the New England area. While successful in business, Sherman's unique talent was troubleshooting and solving electrical and mechanical problems. He could fix anything and always found the most elegant solution. He was fortunate to have many caring neighbors and friends who enjoyed and appreciated his many talents and skills. Sherman's passion was collecting and repairing antique radios, clocks and cars. He always maintained and repaired his own vintage cars, frequently fabricating parts in his workshop when they could not be found. He participated in road rallies around the world including the Mille Miglia in Italy and Japan. It was at these events where Sherman was truly in his element, often helping other drivers get their cars running again while they stood in awe. While most other participants brought their own mechanics and enjoyed the social parts of the event, Sherman reveled in climbing under the hood to diagnose and repair their cars. He was dearly loved and will be sorely missed in so many ways. Services will be at Temple Shir Tikva, 141 Boston Post Rd., Wayland MA on March 12, 2012 at 11:00 am. Following interment at Beit Olam Cemetery, shiva will be observed at the home of Steven and Michelle Wolf, Monday until 8pm and Tues. 1pm to 8pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Glen Highland Farm Border Collie Rescue, 217 Pegg Rd, Morris, NY 13808, or the charity of your choice. I knew Sherm only briefly, but what an impression he made! He invited me into his home to view and photograph his E. Howard clock. With this information I was able to construct a reproduction for my E. Howard movement. I wanted to show him the results and that is when I learned of his passing.
My condolences to the family.
May his soul find peace and joy forever.

We are sorry for your loss. Sherm was a great man who took the time to share his knowlege and lend a hand any time he could.

Sherm shopped at our surplus electronics store Eli Heffron and Sons for many years and was friends with my father Ben.

Later on we were all car people and Sherm helped to support my efforts running the Tutto Italiano Show for the benefit the Museum of Transportation in Brookline.

We enjoyed his company, the many experiences over the years, including attending the opening of Great Woods, seeing him at various car shows and events and an unforgetable tour of his various eclectic and wonderful collections.

Sherm you will greatly missed.

We are so sad to learn of the passing of our dear friend Sherman Wolf.
We first met Sherm in 1983 when he came to stay with us and our then young family.Following this visit Sherm purchased from us the first of his significant Ferraris, the (ex Sterling Edwards) blue and white 340 MM..We quickly found that we had a common passion for things mechanical and shared the aim of attempting to achieve perfection whilst agreeing "perfection is not of this world".
With the proceeds of the 340MM sale we purchased the Watford premises of our family business(DK Engineering) where we restored numerous Ferraris for Sherm, almost all of which he maintained to this day in even better condition than when we first completed their restorations.
I can clearly see his smiling face and hear his quite but infectious laugh which generally punctuated our conversation.
Sherms generosity and kindness to others was truly inspirational.
I was lucky enough to share with Sherm the enjoyment of many events including a memorable early 80s Mille Miglia event where we drove at outrageous speeds in that extremely powerful 340MM.
Justin and Jeremy vividly recall, as a highlight of their youth ,the summer in the 80,s they spent as house guests of Sherm.
We spoke just a few weeks ago and although he could no longer drive his old cars his enthusiasm was undeterred. Explaining excitedley how he was busy restoring lots of the tricky Houdaille shock absorbers as used on early Ferraris for owners from all over the U.S.
I consider myself blessed to have had the friendship of such an outstanding and exceptional guy.
Sherm you are sorely missed.
Kate,James,Jeremy and Justin join me in sending our heart felt condolences to Steven,Scott,Julie and their families.

Scott, Steve, Julie: so sorry to hear of the loss of your dad!

When I was 21 Sherm hired me right out of college (I think I met the "boys", Scott and Steve, just a couple years after that). At first I didn't know what to make of him, as he sat in his big, cluttered office, mostly talking on the phone, with this giant machine clicking away behind him. Later I learned that this was his one-of-a-kind radio paging terminal, which he'd lovingly constructed and now wanted to "computerize". That's where I came in, along with Bob Sullivan, also just hired.

Years of learning, adventure and fun followed while we all forged our path in the brave new world of mini- and then micro-computers. A few favorite memories are: Looking through the Eli Heffron bill with Sherm, with him then deciding how much he'd actually pay for the the "surplus" (mostly-junk) electronics that he'd picked up (along with a few gems), testing the TP-100 beeper pagers for false paging, watching Sherman take apart and put back together the guts of the ASR-33 teletype (which consisted of hundreds of intricate parts) and many more.

I met my wife Carole when we were both working at ZipCall, and we remain happily married today.

Sherman was an inspiration to me, sort of a father figure even, and will be greatly missed.
