PAUL PETERSIEL Obituary

PETERSIEL, Paul The guy with the big black glasses who was hip before he even knew it, entered into rest September 24, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born July 27, 1944 in Malden, he resided in Swampscott for most of his adult life. Paul was the beloved husband of Louise Petersiel with whom he shared 44 wonderful years of marriage. He also leaves behind his cherished daughters, Jenna Petersiel of Aquinnah, MA and Erica Petersiel of Swampscott, and many incredible friends. Formerly know as the "Hummus King" (or as he used to say, he invented hummus) Paul created Tribe of Two Sheiks, a branding achievement which brought hummus to the masses. Always an entrepreneur, fourteen years ago, Paul and Louise purchased a seaside Swampscott staple and transformed it into Red Rock Bistro, a fine culinary, social and musical destination, one of the first of its kind on the North Shore. His favorite place to relax was Martha's Vineyard, where he would spend his time bird nerding, digging clams, and fishing for striped bass (often unsuccessfully) while enjoying his extraordinary life with Louise. And it was truly extraordinary! Although he was taken way too early, it can be said that he lived his life to the fullest. Paul will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all that knew him. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 27 at 3:00 at Stanesky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel, 10 Vinnin St., Salem-Swampscott line. Memorial Observance at his late residence on Saturday 6-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation, PO Box 1245, Albert Lea, MN 56007 or the charity of your choice. The family would like to acknowledge and thank all of those at Mass General Hospital who provided remarkable and heartfelt care for Paul. Paul did so much for our local music scene! He was a lover and supporter of music and the musicians who made it. The gigs that our band played at the Red Rock were great and the people we met there have become good friends, thanks to Paul. We miss Paul and are thankful to his wonderful family!

Louise, Jenna & Erika; it is so hard to believe 6 years have gone by since our wonderful Paul has passed. I often find him & Rite Foods coming up in my conversations & memory. Just recently I was raving about his being a chef for us in his big kitchen at Rite Foods. Bagels with cream cheese, nova salmon, bermuda onion & tomato, YUMMY!

If by chance you look upon these condolences, I add my name to the list of those who both admired, respected, and yes loved your father and husband; Erica, Jenna and Louise.
I was going through Swampscott last week and saw that the restaurant has been torn down and a new project started. knowing that Paul has had this battle with cancer I feared what I now know to be true.
Although my relationship with you has been mostly professional, I do regard the Petersiel's as my friends and enjoyed Paul's humor, mutual love of music and desire to serve his community as a dedicated businessman. My deepest condolences for your loss, and many prayers of well being from Hilarie and I.

So sorry to hear of your loss of Paul. I will always remember him and Red Rock fondly. Erica and Louise, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Believe it or not, it has taken two months for this sad, sad news to reach me. I knew Paul well and admired his attitude: towards his family, towards his business, and towards his precious (but limited) his time off. I'll be driving past the now-shuttered Red Rock Bistro this weekend, and will slow down to salute my friend and cherished client. Chris Lyons

I am sorry to say that we just learned of Paul's passing moments ago. Red Rock Bistro had become part of the culture of our area. Judy and I considered ourselves among the oldest friends of the Bistro and for years, it seemed, Paul or Louise would question us on the latest addition to the menu. For us it was all about the food and the friendship. Then, with the addition of the new bar and all the TVs, we went for the memories and with the hopes of seeing Paul and/or Louise and/or Erika. We felt the warmth of their greetings year after year and hope that they felt our affection in return.

Dear Louise, Erica, and Jenna - On behalf of all of us in The
12:01 Blues Band, I send our most humble and heartfelt con-
dolence on Paul's passing. He was a champion for live music
and the musicians community in general. There wasn't a bad
gig for us ever at The Rock for us, and he treated us with the
utmost respect as the professionals that we all are. That is
a rare thing these days. We have lost a friend as well as a
passionate advocate for things that matter in life. Our very
best wishes to all of you in your time of mourning and our
thanks to The Petersiel family for caring about all of us in
the music community.

Dear Louise, Jenna and Erica,
I was so sad to hear about this. Please know that all of you are in my prayers. I was lucky enough to babysit for Jenna and Erica and first met you when you lived on Puritan Road;you and Paul couldn't have given me a warmer welcome. Last time I saw you, you were holding hands at your own private table at Red Rock. Such a nice couple, always. Please know I'm thinking of you.

Paul was a champion of the local music scene ... So many of us benefited from his passion for music. My band and I looked forward to our performances at the Red Rock. Paul always made us feel as though we were playing in his living room just for him. Our favorite times were when he would pause for a few minutes during all his rushing around and listen to one of his favorites that we would play ...
My band and I are very grateful to Paul, Louise, Erika and Jenna for the opportunities and experiences we were given by having played at the Red Rock. Sincerely. The Brian Maes Band

I worked for Paul, he gave me my first full-time job, when I was 22, and I stayed for 16 years. To this day, I will be driving in my car and I will remember one of the many hysterical moments when I was working at Write Foods, and I laugh out loud. I wish I could just tell you every funny moment, there were so many...One of those moments was when we were going to a big meeting with an important customer. Bruce and I met Paul there, he was dressed in a flawless camel hair suit. We all know what a stylish guy he was. With all that style, he was wearing neon hot pink socks! The buyers did not know what to think...but we knew better. Oh, the stories I could tell!

I cherish these memories and now realize that Paul had an amazing ability to hire and support a bunch of oddballs. I have never laughed so much. It was a fabulous way to spend my 20s and 30s. It was such a unique and special atmosphere, and I thought that all companies were like that. Boy, was I wrong. He was a big part of our lives. Paul, thanks for all the fun times and the laughs. I, for one, will never forget.

God Bless you and keep Erica, Jenna, and Louise well <3 ~Tina Donovan

Dear Louise,Jenna and Erica, I am truly sorry for your loss and my prayers are with all of you. Paul will truly be missed by everyone lucky enough to have known him. He was a true gentleman and a real friend to all the bands that played at the Red Rock. I play drums in the 12:01 Blues Band and we started playing there in early 2001. Paul,Louise,Jenna and Erica always treated us with respect and made feel like family. We also had the honor of being the last band to play at the Red Rock. I will miss Paul personally and we will always give him full credit for coining the phrase " It is what it is". Rest in heaven my Friend.

Louise and Family:
We were one of Paul's first patrons at the Rock. The warm and inviting atmosphere that you and Paul created gave us what Norm had in Cheers. We felt like family there, shared an appreciation for good food, good drink and oldies music ("they were newies then") and we shared many heated debates on local political issues...actually Paul vented and we listened. Paul knew every customer by name and we always felt special when he came over to our table or bar seats to say hello and to make sure everything was in keeping with his high standards. Paul was in every sense of the word the mayor of Swampscott. He knew everything that was going on in town. His smile, his stature, his caring nature and his dark-rimmed glasses will not be forgotten. May Paul's soul be bound up in the Book of Life for all eternity and may God hold him in the hollow of his hand.
