Bruce Canney Obituary

Of Dover, MA, died at home on Sunday, June 23, 2002, after a courageous ten month battle with esophageal cancer. He was 49. Bruce was born in Needham, MA on February 16, 1953. He was the son of John J. and the late Marjorie (Winn) Canney. He was the husband of Kathryn (Cramer) Canney and father of Isaac and Larissa. He also leaves two brothers, John of Cohasset and Neil of Needham and a large and loving extended family. He grew up in Needham, attended Needham public schools and Hampshire College, Amherst, MA, where he studied architecture and sustainable technology. As a General Contractor, he designed and built fine quality homes in Needham, Dover and Medfield, with his brother Neil and worked on the restoration of several historic buildings in MA. During his 23 years as a Dover resident, he served on several town committees, as a Boy Scout leader and soccer and baseball coach, as well as being a member of the Dover Volunteer Fire Department. Bruce's passion for sports included skiing, mountain climbing, tennis, kayaking, bicycling, softball and of course the Red Sox. Cremation was private; a Memorial Service and Celebration of His Life will be held Saturday, August 3, 2002, 10:30 am, Story Chapel, Mount Auburn Cemetery, 580 Mount Auburn St., Cambridge, MA. Jack Canney and family will host a reception at 15 Kingsbury St., Needham for those family and friends who would like to attend, following the service, starting at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wellness Community of Greater Boston, 1320 Centre St., Suite 305, Newton Ctr, MA 02459, or HealthCare Dimensions Hospice, 764 Main St, Waltham, MA 02451.
