GEORGE E. PITTS Sr.

Pitts, George E., Sr. Age 91, passed away on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at Greystone Farm Assisted Living in Salem, NH, formerly of Dedham. Born in Cambridge, he was the son of the late John and Jennie (Luyckx) Pitts. George was raised and educated in Dorchester. After High School he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in Warner, NH. He was a World War II Veteran; he joined the Navy in 1942 and served on the following ships: USS Yukon, USS Boston and USS Colorado. He received the following medals: WWII Victory Medal, American Area Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Medal 2 stars, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon 8 stars and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1945. A good deal of the war journal he kept has recently been published in the following books by author Steve Kelly: Baked Beans – Volume 1, Volume 2 and Volume 3. In 1948 he joined the Boston Police Department where he served the city for over 32 years. Following his career as a police officer, he worked as a security guard at Codex Corporation in Mansfield for 16 years. George was an avid golfer! George was predeceased by his brother John Pitts of Colorado and his sister Marjorie Vraibel of Connecticut. He is survived by his wife Mary E. Pitts of 66 years, also of Salem, NH; daughter Mary Lawrence and her husband Walter of Plaistow, NH, sons George Pitts, Jr. and his wife Maria of Chelmsford, Steven Pitts and his wife Ann of S. Easton and Ronald Pitts and his wife Anna of Norton, daughters Lorraine Makhoul and her husband George of Fremont, NH and Susan Cowan and her husband Robert of Plaistow, NH; as well as 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Robert Pitts of Connecticut and 10 nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours at the George F. Doherty & Sons Wilson-Cannon Funeral Home, 456 High St., DEDHAM, Thursday, July 9 from 4-8pm. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Mary's Church, 420 High St., Dedham, Friday, July 10 at 9am. Burial will follow at the Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org/manh).
