HARRISON BLACK Obituary

BLACK, Harrison, M.D. 94, a longtime resident of Dedham and Dover, died peacefully in Rockport, Maine on May 10, 2013. Born March 26, 1919 in Cincinnati. Married over 60 years to Gertrude D. Black who predeceased him in 2011. Father of William H. Black of Oxford, MS, Timothy S. Black of Cincinnati, OH, and Nancy B. Carhart of Washington, ME. Grandfather of Abigail C. and Emily H. Black. Dr. Black was a nationally renowned thoracic surgeon and pioneer in open heart surgery at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, while serving as a faculty member of the Harvard Medical School. When he retired from medicine, Dr. Black researched and wrote two volumes of family genealogy which were published by the New England Historic Genealogical Society. A graduate of Deerfield Academy, Princeton University, and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Black was also an avid and accomplished sailor. A founding member of the Biddeford Pool Yacht Club, he served as Commodore of the club for twenty years. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Martin's in the Fields Church, Box 274, Biddeford Pool, ME 04006. A Memorial Service will be held in Biddeford Pool, ME, later this summer.

Thank you Dr. Black for saving my life, and for all the hours you spent away from your family for me! I´m 65 now and I never thought I´d make it past 18, but with the grace of God and you, I´m still standing! I´m forever grateful! Rest easy kind sir, Cindy
