HELENE LEW Obituary
Lew, Helene
Helene Gar-Ling Lew, 75, of San Francisco, CA, who grew up in Brookline, MA, died on Sunday, November 4, 2012. She had recently relocated to Tempe, AZ, near her sister's home. Born in Canton, China, Ms. Lew emigrated to Brookline in 1951 with her older sister, Gratia, in order to reunite with her father, John Shue Fong Lew, and his wife, Violet. She graduated from Brookline High in 1958. After graduating from Pembroke College with a degree in Biology, she joined the Peace Corps and went to Thailand in 1962 (the program's inaugural year there). Discovering a love of travel, she traveled through Asia and Europe. Upon returning to the States she worked briefly in the lab of Peter Bent Brigham Hospital before attending Columbia University for an M.A. in Education. Ms. Lew settled in San Francisco, where she taught for over 28 years at Commodore Stockton Elementary School in Chinatown. She retired in 1998. She is survived by her sister, Gratia Mah (Lee) of Tempe, AZ; nieces Jean Mah (Michael) of Washington, D.C., and Aileen Yap (Rick) of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; and grandnieces Olivia, Audra, and Leah. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her for her sacrificial generosity, loyalty, and determined independence.
