VLADIMIR FORMANEK Obituary

Formanek, Vladimir
Dr. Vladimir "Vlad" Formanek, 52, of Westwood, MA, died suddenly in the loving presence of his wife on March 7th as a result of complications from his heroic battle with brain cancer. Vlad is survived by his wife, Jamila; mother, Jerry; brother, Michael; sister-in-law, Carol; children: Jana, Samia, and Joshua; grandson, Adam; and nephew, Michael Jr. Vlad was an esteemed member of the Brigham & Women's Hospital community who selflessly committed himself to his vocation as an anesthesiologist. Vlad often volunteered for international medical missions, helping the people of: the Caribbean, Central America, Eastern Europe, and Africa. Vlad was an inspirational, generous, and adventurous individual who maintained an aura of humbleness despite his many accomplishments. In lieu of flowers and gifts, it is requested that donations be made to the Pan-Mass Challenge (Team Vlad) or the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to help find a cure for all those who are still battling. Announcements for a memorial service to celebrate Vlad's life will be held at a later point. Please contact [email protected] for information. "Why can't more people be like Vlad?"

Fifty years ago, we graduated from (let´s say) middle school together in Pilsen. Last week, we met as a former class to mark this anniversary. Among other things, we remembered you, Vlad. So, you were with us in a way.

Dear Jamilla....We are so sorry to hear of Vlads passing...all of us here at Old Sod Landscaping on the Cape loved him. We loved working at your wonderful property by the sea. While we worked there Vlad constantly kept us supplied with cold drinks, coffee if we needed it, fresh fruit and pastry. In 27 years as a contractor, Vlads generosity wins over above anyone I have ever worked for. Additionally, I received a gift certificate from both of you for Christmas. As a fellow immigrant we had great conversations about the Old Country...I wish I had known him longer...my condolences to you and the family.

I will always have fond memories of Vlad. He was one of the amazing teachers I will always remember during my time as a resident at Brigham and Women's Hospital. I fondly recall visiting him in the hospital after his surgery with a group of residents. Even post op he greeted us with a smile. My warmest thoughts and prayers go out to Jamila and the rest of his beautiful family. I look forward to celebrating our beloved Vlad at the upcoming memorial.

I am really sorry to hear about this- I graduated a few years ago, but I will always have fond memories of Vlad. Especially for those of us who would freak out during tense situations, to have a true scholar and a gentleman in the room was very reassuring. Rest in peace.

I was honored to work along with Vlad in the OR and in the ICU as a nurse. He typified what an great person is like as well as what a great doctor would be like. He will be missed by all. but remembered by all.

I did not know you but have a significant other who worked with you and sings your praises. Thank you for all your devotion in treating mankind and inspiring others.

Vlad was essentially the ultimate role model for anesthesiology residents, and for attendings, for that matter. He was completely unflappable and never intimidated by clinical challenges. He was consummately professional and never uttered a single complaint about work or life in general that I ever witnessed. He was consistently kind and respectful, whether dealing with anesthesia colleagues, surgeons, or patients. In fact his gentle demeanor may have betrayed just how superb a clinician he was; emergencies could materialize in the cardiac, thoracic or general pods, and he would respond with his natural expertise and aplomb regardless of the venue. You always felt an order of magnitude safer if Vlad was in the room during an "anesthesia STAT" scenario. It is incomprehensible that such a wonderful and gifted person should be taken from us so early and so randomly. I only hope that where he is now there is a good brisk and steady breeze for windsurfing.

Vlad was a wonderful, amazing man. I want to recount an event that happened the last time we kitesurfed together at Kalmus Beach in Hyannis back a few years ago. A guy who was out on the water windsurfing became separated from his board and rig. The wind and current pushed his board far from his reach. Vlad heard him yell for help and instantly responded. He quickly kitesurfed out to the man who by then was in danger of drowning, gave him a life vest, calmed him down and towed him safely back to shore. Those of us on the shore know that he saved the man's life. It was an impressive rescue that a professional life guard would have been proud of. Vlad - ever modest and self-effacing said it was nothing.
