1923 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
MANCINI, Alfred Belasco Born Valentine's Day 1923, this youthful charmer and gifted athlete grew up on a small farm in Newtonville, the baby of a big, warm, Italian family. Al lost his mother at 9 and after graduating from Newton High School, followed brother Mike into the US Army. He served in the South Pacific from 1943-46. After the war, Al settled in Venice, CA. He lived "off the grid"; before the term was coined, a bit of a wild child who enjoyed his freedom, sports (playing the ponies and paddle tennis on the beach), California sunshine, and the company of cats Bali and Ma-wow-wa. He was ahead of his time with his interest in nutrition, alternative medicine and recycling. A fine storyteller and repository of family knowledge, his shy yet sociable nature won friends wherever he went. His last decade brought him back to Massachusetts, to be close to his sister Mim in Bedford, and he became a familiar and well-liked presence at the local Senior Center. In 2012 he moved to Tewksbury, then to Mary Immaculate in Lawrence. Al passed away on May 20, 2018. He is remembered with great fondness by nieces Grace Markauskas, Julia Radford, Michael Goodwin, Carol Holyoke, Lois Becker and nephews David and Carl Fricks, their spouses, children, and grandchildren. Interment Saturday, Sept. 22, 11:00 a.m., Calvary Cemetery Waltham. Arrangements made by the Nardone Funeral Home, 373 Main St., WATERTOWN, MA.
