1943 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
LYNYAK, Barbara Bamford Age 72, died on July 19th at Wingate of Harwich (MA) nursing facility from complications of Parkinson's disease. She had been battling the disease for the past 15 years. She will be missed by her friends, and greatly missed by those who loved her. Barbara was born in Cleveland, Ohio and spent her early school years at home in Middleton, MA. She was a 1961 graduate of Masconomet Regional High School in Boxford, MA, where she was class valedictorian. She was never shy, and at graduation her talk concerned the need for greater opportunity for women. Barbara received a full scholarship from Wellesley College, graduating in 1965 with a degree in mathematics. She taught high school math (geometry) for two years in the suburbs of Boston and in Palos Verdes, California. Barbara then decided on a career change, and was awarded a full scholarship to the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. She graduated law school in June 1970, and was a law review editor. She subsequently sought out a law career in New York City, and was hired by Shearman & Sterling in their litigation department. In 1970 some New York City law firms simply were not hiring women, and in interviews she was told so. Shearman & Sterling was an exception to their credit. In November 1970 Barbara married Robert Murray Lynyak, an insurance underwriter with the Chubb Insurance Group in Los Angeles. They had met six months before on a blind date in Washington, DC. They were married more than 45 years and enjoyed substantial travel and corporate stops along the way. Barbara worked for Loeb & Loeb in Los Angeles and practiced law under her maiden name, Barbara Bamford. She later worked again for Shearman & Sterling in New York and for Pitney Hardin, Kipp & Szuch in Morristown, NJ. In 1980 Barbara decided to establish her own firm, Barbara Bamford, Esq. in Madison, NJ. She worked as a sole practitioner for the next twenty years, and became a well known divorce attorney. She even had the distinction of divorcing one woman from the same man twice. During this period, she served as the planning board attorney for the municipality of Harding Township, NJ, a board member of the local YMCA and as a trustee of the Eagle Hill School in Hardwick, MA. In 2000 she retired to Simsbury, CT, and began a new career as a real estate developer. Barbara purchased a five story brick townhouse on Marlborough Street in the Back Bay of Boston; a beautiful building in need of lots of work. She spent two years working with designers and contractors to transform a distressed property into three luxury condominiums, which she eventually sold. In 2004 Barbara retired again to Chatham, MA of Cape Cod. She enjoyed extensive international travel, especially shopping trips to Hong Kong and Istanbul. Barbara is survived by her husband, three children and their spouses: Kevin Scott (Brooke Harlow) of New York City, Stephanie Lynyak Needham (George) of Wenham, MA and Robert Ward (Nicole) of Pottstown, PA. Collectively, she has 7 grandchildren; 6 of whom are Wellesley eligible. Barbara is also survived by her sister, Elizabeth Keepper of Lake Bluff, IL and her brothers Stephen Bamford of Atco, NJ and William Bamford of Scarborough, ME. A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 19th at 11am at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Chatham, MA. Gifts in her memory may be made to the Eagle Hill School in Hardwick, MA.
