CARL ROBERT HURTIG Obituary
HURTIG, Carl Robert Of Cohasset, MA passed away on Wednesday May 29, 2013. Born June 22, 1925 in Milton, MA, Carl Robert is survived by his wife of 59 years, Martha (nee Johnson) and their children: daughter Carol and her husband Val Kratzman of Fairfield, CT; son Carl Walter and his wife Deanna of Saginaw, MI; son Paul and his wife Deborah of Sudbury, MA; son Eric of Pontiac, MI; daughter Sally and her husband Nicholas Taylor of Chapel Hill, NC; and grandchildren: Phillip Kratzman, Christina Kratzman, Carl Victor Hurtig, Brian Hurtig, Kate Hurtig, Edward Hurtig, Sarah Hurtig, Millie Hurtig, Oliver Taylor and James Taylor. He is survived by his sister Anna and her husband Warren Hollertz of Pittsburg, PA. He was predeceased by his parents Carl Edward and Hildur Victoria Hurtig, brother Edward Leonard Hurtig and sister Elsa Victoria Lemont. Upon graduating from Boston English High School, Carl Robert enlisted in the US Army and served in the European theater during World War II. Carl Robert attended Northeastern University on the GI Bill graduating from the College of Engineering in 1948 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. In 1951, he earned a Masters Degree of Engineering from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Through Carl Robert's advocacy, Edward L. Hurtig Hall, home of Northeastern University's Department of Chemistry, was dedicated in 1969 in honor of his brother, who was killed in action in World War II. Carl Robert established several scholarship funds at local universities and an endowed fund to support research of selected engineering professors at Northeastern University. In 1974, he was conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Engineering by Northeastern University. Carl Robert served on the Board of Trustees at Northeastern University for more than 20 years. He was the chair of the Academic Affairs Committee and was a member of the Presidential Search Committee in 1989. In 1998, he was awarded the position of Trustee Emeritus. A life-long inventor and the holder of numerous patents, Carl Robert was a co-founder of Damon Engineering of Needham, MA, and founder of Encor Ltd. and Micronic Systems AB. An active member of the Cohasset Historical Society, Trustee of the South Shore Conservatory and an Overseer at Old Sturbridge Village. He enjoyed singing with the Choral Arts Society in Scituate, MA, vacationing in Steuben, Maine in the summer, flying kites with his grandchildren and reading.
