CHESTER L. SOMERS Obituary
SOMERS, Chester L. Chester "Chet" L. Somers, 98, of Lowell, passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at Hospice House in Haverhill. Chet, born in Cambridge, MA, on August 6, 1917, was the son of James C. and Laura Kerr Somers. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Master Sergeant in the Corps of Engineers. After the war, he worked as a bank clerk in Boston while attending Tufts University graduating with a degree in Education. He was a member of the American Legion and the National Guard in South Hamilton, MA. He was the oldest living member of the Lawrence Light Guard. His love of education started with a teaching position in Shutesbury, MA as a Teacher Principal. He held multiple teaching and administrative positions in Beverly, Salisbury, Abington, West Springfield and Winchendon, culminating his long career in Lowell as Assistant Superintendent of Schools. Chet's hobbies were many. As a genealogist, he researched the Proctor, Winchester and Kerr families of Massachusetts long before on-line sources were developed. He was published in the "Naval Review Proceedings" and collected submariner insignia from the world's navies. He donated his voluminous collection of submarine books to the U.S. Naval Academy where his books occupy a place in the Academy Library dedicated in his name. "Hoofbeats in Bronze" was his last research passion in an effort to document equestrian statuary in the U.S. Chet is survived by his wife and the love of his life for the past 72 years, Harriet, and his children, Susan of Lowell, Joane (Tom) of Williamsburg, VA, Karen (Ronnie) of Sarcoxie, MO, and Craig (Mary,Companion), (Lauri, Daughter-in Law) of Lowell. He had nine grandchildren, Michele, Matthew, Jonathan, Deborah, Stefanie, Amanda, Tyler, Kara and Chantelle and eight great grandchildren, Deven, Maxwell, Sophia, Tessa, Carter and Emmeline, and the late Ariana Somers and Josie Gilbert. Services will be held on Friday, April 8, 2016 with visitation from 10 to 11 A.M. followed by a Memorial Service at the Mahoney Funeral Home, 187 Nesmith Street, Lowell, 978-452-6361. Military Service at the Massachusetts Veterans' Cemetery at 1 P.M., 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon, MA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Merrimack Valley Hospice House, 360 North Ave., Haverhill, MA 01830.
