DANIEL M. WEGNER

WEGNER, Daniel M. Of Winchester, age 65, died peacefully at home July 5, 2013 as a result of ALS. He was born in Calgary, Alberta, son of the late Ewald M. and Amanda Ross Wegner. He graduated from Michigan State University (B.S., M.A., Ph.D., all in Psychology). Married 29 years to Toni Giuliano Wegner of Winchester, loving father of Kelsey Wegner Hurlburt and her husband Larry of Dunkirk, MD, and Haley Wegner of Winchester. Dan was a pioneering social psychologist who helped to reveal the mysteries of human experience through his work on thought suppression, ironic mental control, transactive memory, action identification, conscious will and mind perception. The John Lindsley Professor of Psychology in Memory of William James at?Harvard University, he also taught at the University of Virginia and Trinity University in San?Antonio. At his request, his body was donated to the Massachusetts General Hospital's Neurological Clinical Research Institute for ALS Research. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 13 at the Winchester Unitarian Society, located at 478 Main St., Winchester. Wegner requested that his service be a celebration of life; dressy casual attire (including Hawaiian shirts) is appropriate.
