Sylvia, Jeffrey and Sam, thank you so much for sharing your husband/Dad with us. As a mom who didn't quiet know if football was a good idea when our son was in 3rd grade, Dave quickly changed my mind. Four years later -- dedication, hard work, and the importance of being prepared are just a few of the things he taught Jack that will stick with him his entire life.
We were very lucky to have known him and will miss him so much.

Sylvia, my heart goes out to you and the boys during this very sad time. I have great memories of Dave, and though I hadnt seen him in recent years I always thought of him during March Madness. I had never even heard of it until I met Dave! His love of all sports, including golf, was infectious. I wish I were there so I could offer you my help, but please know that you are in my prayers.

Sylvia,
From the early days at Eveleth we all became friends... then David took on our needs in a professional manner. I cannot believe he has passed. So sudden and much to soon. Jacob is thinking of Sammy and how he is coping and we are all praying for some comfort for all of you.

David was certainly one of the funnest personalities we had at New England School of Law. Sterny was one of a kind, quick witted, fun to be around, kind, generous and just an all around good guy. Although it has been many years since I have seen him, I will always have a smile on my face thinking about Dave - drinks at Maddies, endless jokes and goofing off in the library at NESL.

My sincere condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed.

March 17, 2010

Our thoughts have been with your family during this untimely loss. David's unselfish giving to the community will surely be missed.

March 15, 2010

My sympathies to Sylvia, Sam and Jeffrey. Please know that we will be praying for you.

What can be said about Dave? He was truly one of the GOOD ones. A family man that loved his wife and children. He also touched many lives during his years coaching Marblehead sports. Dave enjoyed winning, but also cared about all of the kids he coached . He was a genuinely nice guy.

Nancy and I have fond memories of working with Dave and Sylvia at the Shed at Gatchell. Watching them take on so much ,and work so hard for Marblehead youth sports, inspired us to try to do our part . I will remember talking to Dave along the first base fence at Giants games, or any game for that matter. He went to many! While his love of family was undeniable, his mistress may have been baseball: youth , high school, college, minors, majors. Dave loved it all. The Sterns once went on vacation in April and Dave had to miss a few of Sammie and Jeffrey’s games. The kids were probably fine with it, but I bet Dave could not stop thinking about a possible loss , where maybe Sammy or Jeffrey could have had a clutch hit or play in the field. Baseball season was special to Dave and he just didn’t want to miss a minute.

Let’s hope that others will follow in his footsteps to continue his fine work with Marblehead sports and the children that participate in them. I will be making a donation to Marblehead Youth Baseball in his honor and know that many others will do the same.

We will miss you, Dave, but will never forget you..

I was so saddened and shocked to hear about David this morning. I have known David for my entire life as our parents were very close friends and I have very early childhood memories of pizza on the beach and boating with him. He was also very helpful to me as a lawyer, when I needed that. I felt very protected knowing that someone who had known me for my entire life was taking care of me.
My deepest sympathies to Sylvia, the boys and Diane.

Our hearts go out to your family. Both of our boys love baseball, largely due to David. David stood out as the most innovative coach we've ever seen. He knew how to deal in a loving and helpful way with children of any age. He treated every child the same, no matter their skill. He was just a wonderful man. We can only imagine the staggering loss this is for your family and friends. Please accept our condolences.
