Not sure what to say?

February 23, 2020

I'd like to share my memories of that terrible day. My dad was chopping down a tree in our yard because it hanged over one of the pathways through a set of trees. When my mom called that it was time for dinner, there was no answer. My mom and brother went to check on him. When they came back, they were running as fast as they could. They grabbed the phone and called 911. While my mom was talking on the phone, Thomas told me that my dad was dying. Once the ambulance got to our house, he was already dead. I really miss him.

He was a great uncle and a fun guy it's sad not to have him here and I am sorry that I was too young to realize what was happening when it happened. I had fun playing board games with him and I wish he could come back. I love you a lot and I hope you Rest In Peace

Dave was in my orientation group at Rice and while we had lost touch, I have very fond memories of our initial days at Rice and the following years. I only just found out and am heartbroken that the world lost such an amazing person far too early. To Dave's family, my thoughts and prayers are with all of you as you enter the holiday season with a hole in your hearts.

My son, Jonathan Hauptfeld, raved about Professor Amdur and his macroeconomics class. Professor Amdur had a monumental impact on his teaching students, a quality rarely seen these days. Jonathan was honored that he was asked to be a tutor for his classes this fall. I was completely shocked by this news and am offering my greatest condolences to his family. Professor Amdur showed so much more strength in coming to Muhlenberg, I was a student in his first class, and though I may not have been his favorite, he always made me feel important. I had the pleasure of babysitting for him and saw what a wonderful family he has and hope that if I can help in any way, they wont hesitate to contact me.

Dear all,
We have just today read through the messages... and are so touched by the thoughts, memories and remembrances. The outpouring from the Muhlenberg community helps us understand why Dave was so certain he found his professional home. Thank you so much for your sharing; it really does help and bring us comfort. We are heartened by your support and love.

Like so many colleagues in my department and the College, I feel a deep sense of loss and anguish for Sharon and Dave's family as well for those of us on campus. We had such high hopes for Dave's future as a colleague, economist, and educator - but we were especially entranced by his great qualities as a person -- generosity, humility, kindness, humor, energy, integrity and service. We will remember him with love, and we'll all remain grateful for the time he spent with us. I hope we can live up to his standards.

I feel truly blessed to have been able to work with Dave at Muhlenberg. His office is directly across the hallway from mine and we spoke numerous times a day. He very frequently had students in his office and it was apparent that he enjoyed their company, and vice versa. He was always the first to contribute to any collections for holiday gifts. He was generous, compassionate, and thoughtful. He had the ability to consider multiple sides of an issue and I sought him out as a voice of reason when things got stressful. We often spoke about Thomas and Juliet and my heart goes out to the entire family during this difficult time. Please accept my deepest sympathy and prayers and may your memories provide comfort.

I had David for an economics class. I am so saddened by his passing; he was an amazing, passionate teacher who truly cared about his students and their success. In his anecdotes about Ecuador, in the intellectual conversations we sometimes had after class, in his passion for teaching which was constantly evident - in the short time I knew him, his dedication to, and kindness towards, other people was his most salient feature. After my final exam, he engaged me in a long conversation about my plan to teach English in peru. Rarely has a professor shown so much interest in my life, and I can't tell you how much I appreciated the help he was always so quick to offer. This was clearly a man who made the world a better place every single day, and would have continued to do so for many many years. To the family: I am so sorry for your loss. May stories of David's greatness comfort you in these most difficult of times, and know that the world cries alongside you. I feel blessed to have known him, for he was that rare and beautiful person who radiated so much light that you couldn't help but feel a little happier, kinder, more passionate, and more enlightened as a result. He taught me about the world and about life. David you will be missed more than you ever could have known

The many posts here from Muhlenberg faculty, staff and students lay bare how much Dave was genuinely liked, admired, and respected by all on campus. Dave brought a willingness and optimism to some of the more difficult and frustrating work of curricular change, and his efforts to build community and friendship among faculty through the Faculty Club will be sorely missed but remembered, and hopefully championed, in his memory. With heartfelt condolences to Dave's family.

I was fortunate to know Dave during his time at Georgetown University. Dave was my TA during my first year of graduate school. He was always ready to help the younger students, in or out of class, and counseled me on my decision to join the Economics department. Dave left a lasting impression on the department through his contributions to student and academic life, including the founding the Economics Graduate Student Organization. His loss is truly a tragedy. My deepest sympathies go to Dave's family.

As the only economist in the department without an office in Ettinger, whenever I enter the building, I go to the third floor offices and look for my friends. David was always someone I tried to find. Every interaction with him as a colleague and as a fellow human being always left me feeling like I had engaged with not only a brilliant mind, but also with a genuine and good soul. I will miss David and his innate ability to give his time and good cheer to all. My sincerest condolences and prayers to Sharon, Thomas and Juliet.

I only had one class with Dr. Amdur two years ago, but he changed the way I looked at economics completely. Dr. Amdur made this class such an enjoyable experience through his anecdotes and words of encouragement. It was evident after the first week of class that he was dedicated to each and every one of his students. Although I had just this one class with him, he greeted me with a big smile and a huge wave whenever he saw me. One of the nicest people at Muhlenberg College and losing him is a shame. My deepest condolences to his wife, children, and the rest of his family. May he rest in peace

June 2, 2014

I had Dr. Amdur for four classes at Muhlenberg. I took his classes every chance I had. Not only was he a great teacher, but he truly cared about his students. He always made the material more palatable with his witty sense of humor. He had a passion for teaching and it showed. My heart goes out to the Amdur family. Dr. Amdur taught me my first economics class freshman year at Muhlenberg, and became my academic advisor. His passion for economics, education, and his students was immediately noticeable. Dr. Amdur always had a smile on his face and was the first to give exceptional advice. There was never a time when he did not excel at his job and go beyond Muhlenberg's expectations. It was very clear that he cared and loved his wife and children more than anything or anyone in the world. Dr. Amdur would share stories and photographs of his loved ones with great pride. He will be greatly missed by the Muhlenberg community, and always remembered.
