1936 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
SERBER, Diane Diane Serber, talented artist and multilingual world traveler, passed away on June 10, 2018. Ms. Serber is survived by her two nieces, Catherine Chaffee Gorman and Susan Chaffee Cuyler, both of Massachusetts; her two grandnieces, Lu and Alexandra Rukhadze; and her two grandnephews, Matthew and Thomas Cuyler. She was loved, greatly respected and sorely missed by all. Ms. Serber was born on February 24, 1936 in New York City and was the daughter of Gilbert and Ruth (Lippert) Serber. She is predeceased by her older sister, Barbara Jo (Serber) Chaffee, MD, PhD. She was also the grandniece of Theresa (Serber) Malkiel, a union organizer and advocate for women's suffrage, who authored "Diary of a Shirtwaist Maker" one year before the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist fire. Ms. Serber was the granddaughter of David C. Serber, civil engineer and subway builder in both NY and Chicago. Ms. Serber graduated from Fieldston School in 1953, earned a BFA from Cornell University in 1957 and a Masters in Architecture from The University of Pennsylvania in 1962. During her impressive career she worked for the architectural firm of Richard G. Stein and Associates, the Dormitory Authority for the State of New York, and was inducted into The American Institute of Architects. Her publications include: "Energy Required for Building Construction" in 1979 and "Energy and Labor in Construction Sector" in 1978. Ms. Serber retired in 2005 to Old Chatham, NY where she enjoyed gardening, painting, reading and traveling. In addition to all these accomplishments, Ms. Serber was an avid animal lover and equestrian. Ms. Serber's family will hold a private memorial service later this summer.
