Eleanor Boylan Obituary

Longtime resident of Newton Lower Falls, passed away on August 5, 2007 in Clermont FL. Mrs. Boylan and her husband Paul, who passed away in 1991, also lived in Rockport, MA for 10 years and Florida for the past 25 years. In the 1960s Mrs. Boylan created the much loved Young Newton Players, a children's theater group, that performed such plays as Heidi, House on North Square and Sara Crewe. Additionally Mrs. Boylan entertained legions of children throughout the NE area at birthday parties, with her delightful puppet shows. Mrs. Boylan was a prolific writer of murder mysteries contributing to magazines such as Ellery Queen, Alfred Hitchcock and America Heritage. She wrote several books on children's puppetry and finally her Clara Gamage mystery series. Mrs. Boylan's greatest passions in life were her family, friends and literature. Those who knew her will remember her often quoted expression when she had to sit and wait "Don't worry about me, I have my book". She will be lovingly remembered and sorely missed by her family, friends and the many people whose lives she touched. Mrs. Boylan is survived by her sons, Paul of Clermont, FL, Edward of Hingham, MA, Thomas of Los Angeles, CA, her daughters, Virginia Hamilton of Boston, MA, Belle Basa of San Diego, CA, 11 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. A memorial service will be held on October 20th at St. Bernard's Church, Holmes Beach, FL. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Mrs. Boylan's name to The Puppet Showplace, Brookline, MA.

Dear Ginny and family,
Nancy and I were greatly saddened to learn of your Mom's passing. We spent last night remembering what a unique person she was, and what a strong influence she was in our lives. Through her puppetry and stage productions, she taught us that there is great joy to be had in The Arts. It's still hard to believe that she got a shy lad like me to act and sing in The House On North Square! Her over-the-top enthusiasm was infectious. (We must confess that our efforts at emulation have on occasion included Eleanor Boylan vocal impressions.) More recently, I discovered your Mom's wonderful mystery writings. It seems that Mrs. Boylan will never cease enriching my life. She, more than most who take life's stage, is assured a measure of immortality by virtue of the love she so freely sowed among us. Forgive me if this condolence reads more like a fan letter. Farewell to a true "original"! If the afterworld's a stage, poor Will Shakespeare better make room in the wings for Eleanor!
Sincerely, Bill and Nancy Keyes
